Or sliced up thin for Christmas ornaments or cedar planks for closets or salmon grilling.

You don't want to use ERC for grilling. It off gasses some not so pleasant compounds.

My normal is that; "I saws um and leaves um".  This was an instance of accommodating a many times repeat customer who gradually accumulated ERC logs and staged them here.

I sawed all of his framing lumber, B&B siding, and wall paneling during the past few years, most of which having Luke as my Tailgunner.

Lynn, there are lots of uses for those slabs. I just did a whack 6 weeks ago and instead of chucking the slabs in the owb, I brought them home (yup I did). I cut them into 12-14" chunks which I might bundle and sell as kindling, but they also make good air fresheners. I have one on the dash of the truck and when the heat comes up it smells nice in there. I have one on a the radiator of my bathroom. Some I use for kindling in the shop stove. If I were doing shows I think I might take a bunch of shorts, clean them up, drill a hole on one end for a hanger string and staple them in a plastic bag to sell as 'redneck air fresheners". I joked about it on my FB business page and had 4 people contact me to get some.

 We always have options.

Take a closer look at what I was disposing.  Those were not actual slabs, it was scraps.  The couple of thicker butt pieces quickly feathered to nothing.

Anything that had a clear face got edged and stacked.  I can assure you that all of the usable material was on the trailer.

Yeah, I did look close. Your pile looks exactly like mine. Cedar is it's own thing and I use the term 'slabs' very loosely here. The wood burns quick and the bark is easy to take off if dry. In fact, cedar bark was shredded and used in fire making kits back in the flint and steel days because it could catch and hold a spark. You can't find better kindling IMHO. But don't load a stove with it because it will take off!

Not sure. Rawhide is like a small town, old western theme, where kids from all over the world come to play cowboy, tend animals, hoot and holler, and generally have a good time. Privately owned, Christain oriented super camp for young'uns. They run year-round and I closely support what they do :)

Nice camp! Very similar to the Ashokan Center over the hill form me. Active educational programs for kids to learn them up on something besides video games.
I looked at their photos and it is likely they are using the slabs for siding and fences or false fronts. Take a look at the photo of the post office (upstairs), that might be it.

Rob, those slabs resemble the Cypress ones that I sawed that had the bark stripped off and were nailed on and chinked to imitate a log building.  $$$

On this job, the slabs were the cut list.  Whatever lumber that was inside was a by-product.

Hello all. Last week I sawed up six red maple logs. This was the last sawing of the year for me as I will store the mill in the barn for the winter.
A couple of weeks ago I cut down this big old (116 yo) red maple. Because of the rot and the shape of the tree there was only two useable logs.

YH says if it don't roll it's not a log. Well, maybe I should call these pieces of trees because they sure didn't roll very well.
Anyway, I went after another tree and got four more logs.

You can see on that big butt log with those deep furrows that there is going to be a lot of waste.

However, getting past the ingrown bark there was a lot of nice clear wood.

The 2nd log of that tree also had a lot of waste but produced some good lumber.

The four logs from the other tree sawed out with less waste.

Those six logs gave me a nice stack of lumber.

Now it's time to put the saw mill away and start working on firewood.

   Happy sawing.....Cutter

I find red maple to be like that. At least it didn't have much twist so that's good.

Get JFD to tell how he unloaded a log trailer with a skid steer.

John and I spent a good portion of this cool morning pulling poverty stick cypress out of the pond.  He was in the canoe, and I was on the tractor.  We are sawing some cypress 1x's for a fellow who is building an 18'x 10' gun room, with 12' ceilings.  We spent way too much time today cutting the order but we sawed some really nice cypress.  We will empty the kiln on Monday and likely put this order in and let it go for a few weeks.  Normally, I like to air dry our lumber for a while prior to putting it in the kiln but with the expected weather and the time constraints on the "barndominium", we'll probably get it dried faster with just putting it in the kiln.

The telehandler that we recently purchased is proving to be a real asset, but we have not had time to really go through it and work out some of the quirks (charging system, steering synchronization and hydraulic leaks).

We will probably saw another good cypress log on Monday to ensure we have plenty of dry cypress to complete the customer's gun room.

Do any of you take a log like Cutter's furrowed maple and open it up with more than 4 faces?

We wanted to saw a little more cypress than the builder/contractor ordered to ensure that he has enough to do the project.  This morning we started prospecting in the pond for some decent sunken cypress logs.  The water was colder than I wanted to get into, and the pond is still deep (2" of rain yesterday), so I just went to likely spots and started dropping a grapple on the end of a choker.  The first log turned out to be a longleaf pine.  After several attempts and a bit of frustration, I hung one that we suspected was pecky cypress.  It turned out not to be pecky but had some heart rot in the first foot or so above the felling cut.  Regardless, the 16' log was bucked into 8's and yielded some beautiful, clear cypress.

A couple of things to notice.  The pecky logs often have little holes on the ends.  The bark comes off easily after spending time under water.  The wood smells sour until it dries.  My hands smell sour after stacking and handling this wood until they don't.  Our little dust collector could not keep up with the quantity of wet sawdust this morning's sawing produced (on 10" boards, the blade was advancing about 2" per revolution).
