I just wanted to brag a little about my new website. Jeff made the site and did a darned good job of it. He was very helpful and added things like the board foot calculator that I didn't even think of.
I highly recommend that you have Jeff make you site for you. I work with industrial computers and PLCs at work but I hate screwing around with PC's. I guess I'm not patient enough but Jeff knows all the ends and outs of this stuff and can create a good web site.
The site address is www.hickoryandoak.com
Check out the pictures of the monster black oak that I cut last month. It was over 50" in diameter. I wish I took pictures of the crane truck that loaded it on the mill. That was a scary experience. At first he had the truck too far from the mill and the crane overloads started alarming. I was scared to death that the lifting tongs would let loose right when he had that monster over the mill. Everything worked out all right and I didn't even hit one single nail. Not bad for a yard tree. :)

Nice website, very good at getting to the points of business. One heck of a job Jeff.

Oakiemac, I like the $5.00 extra for small logs, now if I can just get my heart set on it.

Good job Oakiemac and Jeff. I noticed you had a bundle of lumber crossways on the back of the truck. Are you allowed to haul lumber that way in Michigan? Here in Pennsylvania we'd get thrown in jail for loading a truck like that.

Frickman-I don't know that putting a stack crosswise is illegal or legal for that matter. Nobody ever said anything but then again maybe we just didn't run into the right (wrong) people. I can't see how it would matter. The whole bundle was on the truck and not sticking out but I guess that don't matter to the goverment. They are here to make rules and enforce them illregardless if they make sense or not.

twoodward- I thought about posting prices but it changes drastically depending on what logs cost. If I can get a log for a decent price or for trading then I don't charge as much. If I have to buy them at top dollar then prices go up. Jeff might hook me up with a data base that will reflect current prices but that will be in the future.

As far as I know, hauling crosswise on the truck is completely legal as long as you don't excede load width limits.  Who is going to tell you which way your bundles of cut stock must run? Or which direction pallots should face? not really much difference. Most all 100 inch wood in Michigan, probably 99% is hauled cross way by truck. You dont see it that way by rail however, most always loaded in crib cars length-ways.
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

Great site guys!

Looks VERY nice!

With respect to the lumber crossways on the bed of the truck, I can see why it's not a good idea. (Now remember I DON'T drive trucks). Just speaking from a physics point of view. Your inertial forces would be much greater on your ropes if your lumber was loaded this way, than if it was loaded lengthways. With constant stopping and starting, you're putting huge inertial loads on the ropes. I would imagine this is why the powers that be wouldn't like it...

Like Jeff said, the 100 inch pulpwood is loaded width wise on the trucks. Poplar, especially when frozen or wet, is slippery as snot, but the only times I ever seen loads lost where in situations that the trailor and all did a header in the ditch. I've seen treelength loaded length-wise fetch up on overhead train bridges and over passes and even jilpoking into car windows behind the truck, when loaded a little too high behind the cab. If the chains aren't placed well on those tree length loads you can see the butt end bobbing up and down. Boing boing boing  :o

I suppose with the logs stacked crosswise, you could do like we used to do driving a combine down the road when people behind started honking.  We would just turn on the straw walkers.  I know it isn't very bright but I was young then.  I wouldn't even think of doing it with a load of logs ;D ;D
