I had an umbilical hernia a few years ago and the discharge instructions read lift no more than the weight of a gallon of milk, approximately 8 pounds!

Google inguinal canal, a weakness in the abdominal wall. Some require barn doors. It's a heavy burden to bear.  :)

I had a slight umbilical hernia that appears to be gone after my appendectomy.  The surgeon saw it before surgery and I suppose that he eliminated it since the "extraction" incision was just above the navel.

My lifting restriction was "nothing heavier than a gallon of milk".  That's funny because you never lift a gallon but once and afterwards it's less than a gallon.  :D

It can be like a rivet.  it works its way through a small hole, and on the other side begins to swell, and fill with gas and stool.  to reduce it (put it back inside) requires pain meds and a slow steady push to let fluid and gas go back to the inside.  then the bowel pops back in.  If it cannot be reduced, it requires emergent surgery.  if it goes in, the surgery can wait.

It's been 3 weeks since my surgery and healing is going very well. PA says I can resume activity including chainsawing, ab-crunches, sawmilling etc., but take it slow and if I feel pain, stop. I did a few low level ab-crunches yesterday and felt nothing and feel fine today. Gonna start getting firewood to the house and restart wood heating. If I feel pain she says it likely won't result in damage. It sounds almost too good to be true so I am still going to go SLOOOOOOW.

Still doing ok but trying to take it easy. Did start the generator and now doing cardio and ab-crunch workouts with no pain. No chainsaw or sawmilling work yet. I didn't have pain at the hernia site before the repair so I don't what the significance of no pain is now but I'm thankful for its absence.

A little over a month out, take her easy still, I think I took a good 6 weeks light duty as a young man. Mine was more of a burn sensation than pain. I think the design committee saved the wiring for a little lower.

I've had a couple hernia ops.  I remember during one recovery phase, spying a 5-gallon bucket of wet sand in a place I didn't like.

My surgical area reminded me very quickly that I was an idiot, as I went about moving the bucket to a better spot.
