Identity issues

 This birch is on the Pine Cliff Trail at Governor Dodge state park. I’ve wondered about what caused this odd bark pattern for years, and can only think of one or two other trees that I’ve seen that have the same kind of thing going on-as if they turned into another tree for a foot or so (it goes all the way round) then decided to be themselves again!

The banded pattern in the bark is someone stripping bark off, would be my guess.

Maybe not the correct birch species to strip bark, but the concept is in this link.
