If you didn't see in the "Did Something Dumb" I got scammed by a guy on a Woodmizer FB page on a sharpener.  Needless to say I spent the money, but didn't receive a sharpener.  I still need a sharpener.  I should have just ordered it new in the first place.  Oh well.  I ordered a new one yesterday.  I'm hopeful that I will receive it within a month and can get to sharpening some blades.  I will need to get a setter too.  I figure I can safely go one sharpening without setting and then I will have the setter.  I reported the scam to WM so they know someone is using their products as the bait for scams.

That sucks! How did you pay the scammer? I ask because I got scammed once, and I'm 100% sure it was a scam. It was a fake gofundme for a logging family that had a child with cancer. When I figured out I'd been had for $100, I remembered that it used PayPal so I lodged a complaint. I wasn't expecting to get my money back, I just wanted to get their account shut down for fraud. Shockingly to me, they refunded my money (the scammer, not PayPal). Best I can figure, they have a lucrative scam going and don't want to lose their account so they refund the money when people complain- so they can go on to scam more people🤦‍♂️

I find I can get 3 sharpenings before I need to set. If you time it right😁 when you get to winter if you are in frozen wood you may never need to set because you don't need as much for frozen wood.

I've been running a lot of .050 and .055 blades, they typically only make it 3 sharpenings anyways so they never see the setter. Unless I want to up-set them for spruce or something. Good luck!

Paid with my online banking direct pay.  Should not have done that, but he had already "shipped" the sharpener and I felt compelled to get my part done.  No way to get that money back.  Water under the bridge now.

Sorry to hear that, lessons learned.

I go to pains to only use PayPal. They're security is top notch, I've never had any stolen CC info since I started using them probably 8 years ago. And it gives you a point of leverage with bad actors. This was after being victim to MANY instances of CC fraud when dealing with legitimate businesses (Bailey's and Oakley sunglasses for 2 examples) where security was breached and my info was stolen.

Watching with interest, let us know how this sharpener works out. popcorn_smiley
I definitely want to get my own sharpener in the future, having a good supply of sharp blades makes one change more often and cut better lumber. "It may not be dull, but it's no longer sharp." - to quote Mr. Magic Man
And for when customers brings me the "Oh, there's no nails in them" logs... ZING! :D

Absolutely,  except on the zingers...I find I can put a lot of time into nail strike blades and they still leave a bad finish. The body of the blade usually gets bent and stressed. About all they are good for is to have on hand for when you know you have nail imbedded logs to cut.

Sorry to hear about the scam, that's Just plain irritating! I got took for $400 through PayPal about 15 years ago when someone paid me with a stolen card. Long story with a lesson well learned.

Thanks guys.  I'd never been scammed before and it makes you feel dumb.  I will be very careful from now on.  I will never use my bank account direct bill pay again.  Everything will be thru venmo or paypal with buyer protection turned on.  I will let you all know how this sharpener works.  I need to get some milling done to get some lumber drying.  I've been too busy with other things the last several months.  I sawed a lot of cedar this summer, but almost no hardwoods.  I'm not going to sharpen any of the 4 deg blades that I have so I need to ID those.  I will start with 10 deg blades.  I have some 7 deg kasco that are almost identical to turbo 7 so I think I will be able to grind those.  May take 2 times around to get it done.  Then I will probably just buy turbos from WM after that.

What do you know?  I ordered a sharpener from WM instead of a scammer and I have a legitimate UPS tracking # instead of a tracking # from a bogus "shipping agency" that doesn't exist.

UPS says it will be here on Friday.  Not sure I'll have any time to sharpen blades before I go to work on Saturday.

Right.  One of the reasons I went for the scammer and didn't order one sooner was that I assumed it would be months before I could get a new one.  When I called the MO dealer, he told me that WM had 9 in stock so I went ahead and ordered.

Should have known the sharpener wouldn't come so quick.  Got an updated notice from WM.  They have shipped the extra grinding wheel and the cam kit for 7deg blades, but not the actual sharpener.  Oh well.

I received the grinding wheels and cam today.  I also got another notice from WM that the sharpener shipped today, so I assume I will have it early next week.

I ordered blades (they were on sale ;D) Monday from Indy, and had them in my sawdust covered glove hands Thursday morning. UPS is good with the tracking, I took delivery and instantly they updated it to day and time delivered. smiley_thumbsup

The good news is that the sharpener came today.  The bad news is that I am at work and won't be home til Tuesday morning.  At least it came and within a week of ordering it.

I put the sharpener together and messed around with it a few days ago.  After talking to WM customer service we determined that the shaft on the motor for the grinder is bent.  It was causing a shake and the wheel would only contact the blade as it went around to one side and then it would lose contact.  They are sending me a new sharpener and have emailed me a return shipping label.

I received my replacement sharpener several days ago, but didn't have any time to mess with it til today.  It is in much better shape than the original and I feel like I did a decent job of sharpening a blade today.  I sent it around twice.  The first time it got the face of the tooth and just the tip of the back of the tooth.  After that I dressed the wheel a little more and lowered the grinder head just a bit.  On the second time around, it got almost all of the gullet and all the way up the back side of the tooth.  I did some damage to this blade when I was setting up the first sharpener, so I was happy with how it looked when I was done.  I will put it on the mill the next time I saw.

I sharpened a few blades this afternoon.  I'm starting to get a hang of this I think.  I feel like i'm noticing things that the guy before me maybe didn't do a good job with.  The blade I just did last had a bad spot where a tooth tip was chipped off.  I assume that happened while I was sawing.  I sent it around 3 times and got it down to where the tooth was sharp again.  I'm not sure it was worth the time, but it gave me good practice.  I think I was told by someone at some point that 9/10" at the low point of the gullet was about the life of a blade, so I'm going to go with it.  I will measure before sharpening and ones that are less than that will be scrapped.  Some of my dulled blades have been sitting in the shed I've been building.  Clearly that wasn't a great idea as they have developed some surface rust.  I need to finish the shed and get it closed in.  I had forgotten where they were for a while.

I sharpened the remaining 10deg blades I have and then was going to put the 7deg cam on the sharpener.  I realized that I bought the 7/39.5 instead of the 7/34.  I have 7/34 Kasco blades.  They are a perfect match for the WM ones, but without the correct cam, I won't be sharpening anything.  I supposed I could put the blade on an just kiss the front of the tooth for one sharpening, but I'm not in that big of a hurry, so I will wait til the correct cam comes.  I'm hoping WM will just exchange it for me and I will send the other one back to them.
