What pray tell is a quartersawn tomato stake? Turn them all 90 degrees and double the price!!!  :D
As we all know when doing normal through and through sawing we end up sawing a certain amount of lumber where the boards are sawed at 90 degrees to the grain which by definition is quartersawn. In the case of some wood like my White Oak tomato stakes the fleck shows up real good. If I sort through them I could pick out the ones with the pretty fleck showing but I doubt they would sell for enough more to justify the effort. ::)

I Returned to my job 26 miles away. This time the customer had a mediocre helper but better than yesterday. We had a nice, cool, breezy and cloudy day to work. Sawed 1776 bf of red oak including the 3 hours or so yesterday before my breakdown. All was good today!

Pretty neat slab pile compared to some I have seen.

Many times repeat customer and sometimes log provider/partner on lumber deals. Has worked well for both of us. I met him as a result of a sawing demo I did for our local USDA/Forestry department 4 years ago.

I was grabbing stickers one time and realized that my edger operator had run a bunch of smallish Walnut through the edger and turned it into stickers  :o, we had a class on how the rules for pine are not the same as the rules for Walnut after that, I will say they were good looking stickers.    ::)

Not much for help as he likes laying in the shade and supervising best.  We did manage to knock out about 400 board foot of quarter sawn white oak.

Larry,

Your helper kind of reminds me of the one I had yesterday. ::) I finally had to tell him to remove the slab laying on the bed of the mill so I could make my next cut. He had watched it as I had already made a couple passes but I finally got low enough I could not clear it any more.

My best repeat customer dropped off a couple of white ash logs he got for free from a "yard tree" a friend of a friend was taking down. The first log actually looked like a log and sawed up nice, the second...well, not so much. ::)
I did buck some off the end off that had 3 different "trunks" (more like limbs) coming out of it. :D

Luckily no nails inside, but had to change blades when it started cutting waves. Did make some kind of funky looking slabs with real nice color coming fresh off the mill. :)

Thanks guys.  It is always tough on all of us when her meds need to be adjusted.  This time she couldn't do it by herself.  Thus the hospital.

I'm on a fair size job sawing a timber frame barn out of the gentleman's logs. He has cleared some lowlands and pulled all the Tamarac and pine. He had a Sawyer in last year and the gentleman quite on him. I told I know why..... Tamarac...You can't put enough pine sol and dove in the water bottle to saw it. I got out the spray bottle of diesel and that helped .
We were there for 2 days last week and I'm guessing another 2 days this week to Finnish.

This ia about 1/2 the logs left. I will move the mill when I get there tomorrow morning .

The tarps are covering the wood he sawed last year. I have told him not to cover the wood I sawing. I'm afraid to look underneath. At least the ends are open.
The black flies showed up on day 2 . it's hot enough now that they should all be gone when I get there tomorrow.

These pictures are somewhat out of order but I got to play with this huge, hollow walnut today. My apologies for the tease but I'll have some samples of wet cookies (circles?) to post tomorrow.

For reference, the cuts are at 3"

Two days sawing two different helpers stacking. Good weekend.

Larry

We do not have much if any naturally occurring poplar so I only get to saw it about every 10 years.

Today was the day.  As I sawed it my first thoughts were how can anybody charge to saw this stuff? :D ;D :D  It cuts so easy, almost zero marks from the blade, no lube required, and lots of different colors.  It wasn't the good rainbow stuff, but still had lots of yellow, white, green, and browns.

My customer was a guy in his 80's building a new smaller house.  He will be using the wood to trim the inside.

Neat looking stuff Larry. Haven't cut any yet myself, so far cherry is my favorite to cut.

This customer is finished but not the location.

2192bf of SYP framing lumber sawed today added to the 1598bf previously sawn is 3790bf for the job.

This customer standing on the left and the "new" customers seated.  They are 70 year old identical twins that will never be sure that they are who they are. ??  When they were babies they could not be identified from each other so they wore bracelets so the family would know which was which.  Well the grandmother was bathing them and removed the bracelets and then later did not know which bracelet went on which twin.  So even now, they do not know it they are me or he.  ::)

I will be sawing Pecan timbers for one of them next week (that is two 4X8's on the trailer) and then ERC for the previous customer's brother but all at this same location.

I am off for the rest of the week while they stack lumber and then fall, buck, and haul the Pecan logs.

While we were eating our lunch the customer's wife serenaded us with her dulcimer.  Here is a short clip:

finished the Barn Timber Frame job in 90F +++ heat. The customer ran out of logs and will drop more trees and call me later in the summer. It will be enough to keep him busy for a month or 2.
I don't really know how you southern boys do it when it so hot.

Stephen1, couldn't agree with you more. Got home after work last night and just needed to saw up another 150bf of white oak to finish up a pac. 91 degrees and the buffalo gnats were terrible when I got home, just couldn't find the P&V to do it so I worked in the cooler shop instead. My hat's off to you southerners to be able to consistently produce in the heat  smiley_clapping .

Just finished a local job for a neighbor. He actually has his own small mill but he said he has barely used it so he wanted to watch me mill to learn. Most of the logs were also too big for his mill. We sawed about a dozen red oak logs averaging 26" diameter, all 16' long. 10 hrs total. Sawed mostly 4/4 he plans to use for trim in his barndominium he is building. Also a few slabs. I didn't tally the bf because I was charging by the hour, and was dying of heat, so I just wanted to pack up and head out asap.
I also wanted to note that I recently bought some WM turbo 747 blades and they sure cut nice compared to the 10 deg Silvertips I had been using. Super straight but still need to see how they do in pine.

I'm with you: 90 and humid wears me out. Personally, if I'm standing still in the sun and sweating it's well above too hot for me...

FPP: I like the 747's also. They work well in pine but like all will begin to dive in large knots as they dull with too much feed rate.

It was dang hot out today🥵 We just go from winter to summer anymore.

We are forecast for the 90°+ for next week and probably for the rest of the Summer and actual Summer is still 19 days away.

School is out, customers have help, and are now calling trying to schedule.  I have already had to tell two that it will be July.  June is booked up.

Ya, the other day I was thinking about how it seems nobody asks me to saw when it's in the 50s and 60s, but then also realized that the last few springs in MN, that would have only been within a 1 week window. No spring anymore, we go straight from winter to summer.

Yeah spring is 1 week anymore, and I hate it. I really dislike hot weather, I think I need to find new hobbies that don't include sweating. Maybe buy a jet ski or something🤔😊
