The Art of Raising a Puppy 
How to be your dog's best friend 

Both by The Monks of New Skete

They raise and train Shepherds but the lessons work great for any breed.
We have had German Shorthair Pointers and the basic obedience training in those publications are excellent.

Obviously with our bird dogs we advanced on to other specifics.

In my life I have buried more dogs that were are kids and every time we would say . Not getting another one because our hearts were broke. But a year or so down the road we would get another one this last time we got two. Dread to think about the day they pass but truly enjoy the friendship they give us every minute of the day  :D.

We all have pets over the years, they come and go, and our heart breaks when they go. As I get older, I think if I get a new pet. Will I outlive it? But now it's just me, and I don't feel anyone can take care of the pet as well as I can. When I'm laying there dying, all my thought will be [ who will take care of them ] 
To me, that will be harder than dying.
The ones I have might be the last ones.
Sounds dumb, I know. Just things one thinks about when getting older.

Peter, that was my exact thought with Sawyer. He was to be my last dog for the very reasons you expressed. He lives on through Cedar.

Peter, You have articulated our feelings exactly! I'm not sure that I want my pet partners to outlive me either. Not knowing what would become of them would be much too difficult to handle. Dumb? Not in my opinion my friend!

I've gotta admit the ratio of ears to body made me laugh,struck me as goofy looking  :D. Certainly a good looking pup though you can tell there's a lot going on behind those eyes.
