This came in yesterday. It's a series of online training powerpoints on mass timber. I'm still on the first intro one but figured others might be interested;

The Mass Timber conference is either going on now or has just happened in Portland. This is a link to some of WoodWorks related stuff from a recent email;

I think it's great to see interest in new products but are a bit concerned about all the hype, it is drawing in lots of VC type people with unrealistic expectations.   Seeing quasi conservation hype much like we saw for carbon projects.  I'd hate to see a great idea get ruined.

Lots of states have facilities under construction, another concern.  I'm worried they'll be more supply than projects.

The first building using this construction that I saw up close and toured was the Upside down Viking ship skating oval in Hamar Norway. Built for the '94 Olympics. I toured it in '93 as they had just completed the construction. The photos in the  linked article do not come close to expressing the massive size of this building or the truss timbers.  For scale, they were just getting ready to host their first trade show in the half, a home show. Sitting on the floor was a 3 story modular house, full size, and it looked like a doll house inside that building. I climbed up to the top row of seats to examine the truss ends and (this was over 30 years ago) I think I recall the glulam cross section was well over 12"x18" . You can google for outside photos, but I can tell you the volume of this building is massive.
ARTICLE HERE.

 The building is 1/4 kilometer long and 1/8 km wide. Max floor to ceiling height is 118' (36m). VIKINGSKIPET

Back in 1980, the Tacoma Dome was built, out of wood in WA.

My recollection of a walk through in the upper wood structure was looking down at the basketball floor below, and realizing how really far up in the air we were. Looked like a postage stamp down there.

The second oldest laminated arch building was put up in 1934. Served well until a few years ago, when the building had to be removed in 2010. The laminated arches were tested in a laboratory engineering lab for strength after 76 years.

Just got an email, our engineer is back from the conference. He is really more residential focused and mass timber is thus far focused on larger commercial projects, but good to keep an eye on what's going on. There are some notes, if interested shoot me a pm. Next year is 3/31-4/2

Don, it's been mentioned that until mass timber is used in residential buildings, there will be far more supply than projects.
Here are two photos of a modular build of a residential building in Winnipeg.
Note the lumber used for the ceiling/floor.
How many 2x6's is that?

Does this count as 'mass timber', or is that term reserved for commercial projects only?

Well, my question was so darned compelling that I looked up the Wiki reference to mass timber.
 😋
Turns out that the term "nail laminated timber" or NLT is what the construction industry calls it up here.

At some time an architect or engineer or perhaps an accountant, pencilled out the price of truss joists/2x12s/LVLs and this came out as the best choice.
