If they are big enough to quartersaw and you hit the ray fleck just right, you can create markets for it.

I've quarter sawn sycamore for flooring and cut if for bar tops. Beautiful wood if you hit the fleck. Cut it a little thicker, even quarter sawn if you have large knots it will move some. I don't have any problem selling sycamore and price it a little below good cherry.
Once you get sap in your veins, you will always have sawdust in your pockets.

I RRQSed it for a customer who made a door to his shop with it. Very nice.

I just had a pile of Sycamore logs quoted for pallet and blocking wood. They are paying 40 cents BF here in central Ohio. There is a VERY limited market for when quarter sawn for trim wood but we have so much of it around here that it doesn't affect the value.  If you decide to flat saw it and use it yourself be sure to use plenty of stickers, put tight banding on the pack every 4 foot or so or pile weight on top of it as it will move around every which way while drying if you don't.

I flat sawed 8/4 for a guy that dried it in a IDry a few years ago.  Came out perfect propellers!  He never asked for any more.

When I quarter saw it the stuff is still hard to move.  I think just because woodworkers don't know about it.  When I use it for projects, like jewelry boxes, it sells like crazy.

I used to sell blocking to a company that used it to set up portable concrete plants for road projects.  They had a list of sizes, some as big as 24" square.  They usually wanted me to deliver to the job site and it brought good money.

Yeah I just got a quote from the log yard was 45 cents BF if I would use it myself what all is it good what have you guys done with it?

if you know wood turners, it is great in segmented bowls.  you can use twisted boards, and after you rip and cut them smaller, you can pick the orientation based on flec.

A good number of years ago, we had a log buyer/mill paying $800/Mbf for large sycamore.  He was quartersawing it and apparently didn't have much trouble moving it.  But, the market may have changed.  Pretty much a niche market.

I also knew a guy that was making butcher blocks out of sycamore.

I sawed RR ties out of the sycamore we got in, and the rest into pallet stock.  3½x6 for the most part.  You get good yield by sawing blocking.

For what it's worth, in my area here in Southeast PA, several mid to high end cabinet shops are using it quartersawn for commission work.  Employees tell me the custom builder customer is paying top dollar for it, at or above black walnut prices.

Doc,

I'm late checking this thread but how wide and how thick were those boards you showed earlier on March 29?

Bostonstrong I'm in south central Pa. I was wondering if anyone was using it for cabinet work I know it has a buitiful grain and color.

I RRQS and sell a good but of it, as American Lacewood.  If had the wood Larry showed, I'd have it sold before he left the parking lot.  RHF Sycamore (Red High Fleck) is gold.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

That is neat looking stuff. Around here I've only seen it growing where it had been planted.

I don't have any problem selling QS Sycamore here in Wisconsin. Doesn't matter if it's all sapwood or mix of sap and heartwood. As long as the figure is nice it will sell.

The boards in my pic came from a 9 foot log, but the home owner saw that two forks were splitting so the wrapped a cable around the two years ago of course it grew into the tree.  so I was disappointed to have to cut it down to 6 feet.
