ive been cutting up reject hardwood logs from the local sawmill and have been very lucky so far not hitting any nails or other metal with the chainsaw. but I keep thinking my luck may run out at any time. most have already been debarked.
I cut up a big red oak today, about 24" diameter, and when I split it up found about 20 spikes, a piece of steel pipe and some romex wire running through part of it.
ive been finding nails and other metal stuff, hinges, lag bolts ect. with close visual inspection and a good strong magnet.
ive got a couple logs that have not been debarked and are at least 30" yet to go and have no idea what might be in them.
suggestions?  ive been thinking maybe I should replace my good rs chain with a cheap chain from rural king. I dont want to destroy my good rs chains. I have a metal detector but I dont think it will go 15" though oak. the magnet has been good to me so far.

Yes you are lucky so far! I think you have the right idea. No sense risking high priced chains if the probability of finding metal is also high. Even consider some of the low priced stuff on Amazon. Other idea is if you have any older chains that you may have given up on, is to try and bring them back to life for the time being. I've done that with some of mine. Either method you pick, it nice to have some "I don't care" chains lying around.  :)

If I want it to find metal in a log, I just put a brand new chain on, works almost every time!
