Hello everyone.

I just wanted to share this photo.

My grandfather worked for GM and this hung in his office.  I really liked the picture and when I was in high school, I asked him if I could have it.

Just think of those guys that used this method to get wood out of the forest...

Enjoy!

Wow! It took real nerve to drive that.

Wait a minute .. that is not a truck .. it is a train on a train truck!

Driving forward probably wasn't as scary as hitting the brakes. (Do you see anything in between the front of the log and the driver, other than the flimsy cab and seat?) :o

Very cool - 1920ish chain drive truck and big honkin old growth on the trailer..uh...rail car.
I'm sure they didn't break any speed records and allowed a country mile to get her stopped.

I think anything shifting in that truck is a bad thing.

Just think how slick those log "rails" would get on a damp day.

Here's a truck similar the one in your photo, only its on a flat road. I think it's an early Mack.

Here's another similar chain driven truck.
QuoteMack truck, 1917 AC Model; owned by Dave Burrowes; Raymond "Ray" Phillip (5/1/1895-4/26/1943) Doran sitting on top of load; chain-driven, hard rubber tired truck, with crank on front, facing camera; license #WN T-21 155816 parked at Johnson Creek log dump on Sequim Bay; Peavey lying on ground between tires; log pond on left; utility poles in background behind truck; 1921 near Blyn, WA.

My personal favourite. If you are gonna do work, do it in style.

Wow, that "doodlebug" tractor was built from a nice car to start with!

I would love to put my hands on the head saw that broke down that log!

jimbarry

Might be harder work than you think  ;)

One of the best threads ever.  I wouldn't have driven that truck if they'd given me that log.

KEC

In that first photo I did not even see any tie-down chains.

Magicman

If there was a failure who would want to be tied to that log??  Just let er go and salvage whatever did not roll to the bottom of the hill.

A lot fo the time it was just blocks of wood to act as shims to keep them in place. Other times, a smaller log as pictured above.

Nice trailer brakes in post #10.

This was my first big one, red oak it was to go to Burlington Vt. for a totem pole. We hauled it up on an old 72 brockway.
