I wore a 20" Northern pike home from fishing the salt river  below the house as a 12yr old. Red and white daredevil treble hook through the thumb. Left my bike and had to climb up out of the river valley trying to keep the fish from flopping. It hurt so bad I stopped on the gravel road at the top and found a rock to put that fish out of my misery.  My x brother in law was the only one at the house. He cut the hook and removed the fish with side  cutters, then took me to the hospital.  I can still feel that fish flopping in my minds eye.

Here's one time I got to be like @doc henderson .... Wherein I was actually part of the solution instead of well, you know.
Sometime >20 years ago, I was Steelhead fishing on the Manistee River- and an older gentleman approached me and asked for help. He had a 7-8 lb Steelhead, an ~8 lb Wad of sinkers, line & Hooks and the meaty part of his right ring finger- all well connected with the barb clearly showing on the wrong side of the wound. The fish was exceedingly anxious to make known her protestations as a participant of this "Cluster" (we'll leave that word right where it is for now, you can add more to it in the privacy of your own noggin), and was attempting quite vigorously to extricate herself from this activity.
I had been given a Leatherman by my bride a few years earlier, and when this gentleman asked if I had anything on me that would cut this hook- I immediately thought of this tool.
Well, some hooks are pretty hard- and it required quite a bit of effort to finally cut the hook. The man wasted no time in dispatching the fish and added it to his stringer.
I still have that Leatherman. I know that they can repair these, as it's very hard to open this one with the cutting edges bent over- but I chose to leave it as a memento. I'd rather have it as a memory of one time I was actually able to help someone that was in a situation I hope to never be in......IMG_4573.jpg

I think those jaws are usually made from 440SS (investment cast, then machined) and they aren't really hard like dikes would be. Yours is a leatherman. I have the Schrade version which was gifted to me by that company. I designed the tooling to hold their jaws for machining as well as did all the loop programming. We put up something like 80 pieces at a clip on a tombstone and had two tombstones alternating, so while one was being machined the other was having the parts changed out and checked. The machine never stopped running and we did thousands in a 14 hour day, longer if we were behind. Overall we did hundreds of thousands of those jaws for Schrade until things went wrong in their business.
Those jaws take a set when they get dented and those cutters are right in the corner and hard to get at but you might be able to get in there with a little cup wheel on a die grinder and sneak that burr off.
Nice save, I bet that felt good to be on the right side of those pliers.

We do not really have much of this kind of equipment in the ED.  I often have to go to my truck or call maintenance.  The big advantage we have is medicine for numbing around the hook or nail, and meds that make you not care as much all the way to drool and not move.  ffcool good job Steve and Tom.

Caught a speckled sea trout with a Mirro Lure that had treble hooks on it drive one of the hooks through the skin on my right index finger last September.   We were fishing with a guide who got kind of excited about the problem.

I got the fish unhooked and released while the guide looked for pliers.  Once we found the pliers, it was standard procedure, drive the barb out of the skin, cut the barb off then remove the hook.  Except it was a self operation, our guide was a bit woozy and had to look in the first aid kit for supplies.  ffcheesy  Emily just kept catching fish... :uhoh: ffcheesy

Used ibuprofen for the pain and continued fishing.

If you have a bunch of grand kids or cub scouts fishing in groups, not a bad idea to crush the barb with plyers.  single hooks no trebles.  ffsmiley   A hat with sunglasses looks cool and can add to safety.  a 5 y/o traumatized by an ordeal like this can be a handful.

Many years ago while mountain trout fishing with spinning gear, I cast my lure and it sailed a bit high.   The lure went over a branch, as I had done many times I gave the lure a little tug with the rod.

Well the lure hung up a bit.  A little stronger tug brought the lure straight at my face in a bullet like trajectory.  I ducked my head to the left to prevent getting hit in the face.   My Dumbo like ear just caught one barb on the treble hook (black with yellow dot Panther Martin spinner).

Yep the barb impaled my ear right at the very top of my ear.  I had to sit on a rock and use my small needle nose pliers/scissors attached to my vest to pull the hook out.  I didn't even have to cut the line.

It was painful (I almost tear up thinking about it) but the teasing I would have gotten from my fishing buddies when we gathered at the end of the afternoon would have been ruthless.  Nobody remembers my slightly bloodied ear but they would never have forgotten me showing up with a fishing lure ear ring.

Jeff the red and white daredevil reminded me with a big grin, my brother and I out fishing and I casted that red and white daredevil, and hooked 2 of the 3 trebles in my back. I still remember the Dr and my Dad laughing as he cut the hooks and then pushed them thru. I bet I was around 10 then.

here is another one.  a challenge at work.  uncle and nephew fishing.  uncle said he knew what to do.  cut off the part of the hook (eye) that was showing.  now the barb and curve are lost in the bicep are.  The uncle sort of forced the nephew to let him do it. after this result the nephew punched the uncle.  a little rough around the edge's family!  We are used to it.  a little lidocaine, a scalpel and forceps, and 1 stitch and presto they can go back to fishing.

As some of you know, since I retired in June, I took on a part time job at a resort about an hour south of me.  One of the jobs is guiding people who are fishing for bass.  This afternoon, I had a 3:30 trip.  While walking down to the dock, there was an 8' gator on the bank sunning.  The eight-year-old did not think it was real, but I assured him that it was and that he should head towards the boat we were fishing from and away from the gator.

We fished until the mosquitoes encouraged them to quit fishing.  The eight-year-old hooked a gator right at dark.  I suggested he reel faster, but he hooked it, and I let him fight it until the hook pulled.  The two boys and their dads caught 19 bass and a catfish.  They missed at least that many.  I was a little worried about the fishing today since we had clear blue skies, cool weather and it is the day after a front.  The biggest fish of the day was caught by the eight-year-old, it was four pounds.

When we were teens, we had a big group of us boys out camping. My buddy's kid brother had a gust of wind catch his back cast and blow his crankbait right into his back. Both trebles buried in his lower back. He asked me to take a look, I got his shirt cut away. Kid was about 15, and pretty tough. He told me to just rip them out, but the hooks were kind of opposing each other the way they sunk in, so when pulling one out, you were making the other go deeper.

I just couldn't do it. The kid was tough enough, I even tried forcing the one set of barbs though his skin so we could cut them off, I just couldn't stomach it though. I probably could've done it on myself, but not someone else.

Part of the issue was that us boys were up to no good and had been up drinking all night, so my buddy couldn't go home to get the poor kid medical attention until he sobered up. So the poor kid brother just toughed it out most of the day fishing with a Rapala hanging out of his back. They even went into the local diner where the kid had lunch while the other customers gawked at the "Fat Rap" dangling from his back🤦

This thread reminds me of the time my wife and I were fishing with our dear friends Jack and Patty in Lake Blackshear near Cordele Ga. We were using ultra-lite rigs fishing for bluegills and crappie and I was pitching a Beetle Spin (A small jig spinner) and I made a long cast and hooked Jack soundly in the jaw. Blood was running down into his beard and I remember telling him to be careful getting it out as it was my best lure I had. I don't think he appreciated my suggestions or concerns about my bait and the fact Patty was laughing so hard she was about to fallout of the boat did not help.

We finally got it free but it just never seemed to work as well as before.

I had some young stockbroker types on the boat today.  They booked a fishing trip from 130-330, which is about the toughest time of day to get bass to eat.  They were around fish the whole time.  All three caught at least one bass and missed several.  One dude caught a 3lber and a 7lber.  I later took five of them to shoot bows and arrows and four on sporting clays.  They had a good time, but the high-roller young boss's tip was not commensurate with the service/experience they received.  I suspect tomorrow will be better.  I'll saw Wednesday, Thursday and possibly Friday.

One of these clowns hooked a gator too.  I suspect we'll have to get one or two removed due to their aggressive nature.  I knocked a solar light off of the dock at the beginning of today's trip with the Bimini top.  I told my good friend/boss.  He saw the light in the Lili pads at the end of his trip.  A gator got it off of the bottom of the pit and decided it was not palatable and deposited it near the shore.

Some folks do not realize/understand that all any guide can do is get the clients to the game.  What happens afterwards is dependent upon the game and the clients.

I guided Elk hunting clients in Colorado for several years.  It can be very rewarding and pleasurable, but it can be otherwise.  I have watched hunters that initially boasted heavily, fall flat.

I have traveled all over the world and into many very remote areas and I have always said the guide is the best and most important investment you make on a big trip. On most of our trips we had a private guide, driver and vehicle. Often the guide was the driver. In many cases we had a trip guide who would be with us 1-2 weeks for the entire trip. He/She would normally find a local guide at each different location we visited who knew the specific area and had access to places no outsider could go.

My barber hunts elk and mule deer and such out west and we have had that discussion many times and he says the same thing. The guide out there can get him access to private land and has already located several big deer/elk before he ever gets there. He talks about the guide telling him about local places to eat and how good the food is. Last time the guide took him to the VFW who were having a dinner or such and he met people there who invited him to hunt their property and come stay with them and such. He says he always brings a big tip for his guide and if he kills a big bull/elk the guide is compensated accordingly.

I can't believe/understand people who will spend a small fortune on a vacation or hunt or such and not hire a guide to get them to see the things they most wanted to see and do.

During the depression years, the guides on the Tobique River drainage always had work. When hunting and fishing was out of season they could trap and cut wood. My grandfather's brother worked for the rail road through those years and never missed a pay cheque.  But to hear him talk, you'd think he had hard times. He never knew what hard times was, except scarcity of certain goods, but not money wise. That only meant he had less to buy, not less money. That made him an old penny pincher for opposite reasons that most had.  ffcheesy
