We have seen Chicken (Rat) and King snakes, but this morning my neighbor told me that his big German Shepard was bitten and died from a snake bite.  Just guessing probably a Copperhead.

Lynn,

Sorry to hear but I bet it was a rattlesnake or a big cottonmouth as both of them should have more venom to kill a big healthy dog. I understand a copperhead would make him sick but I'd bet not enough to kill a GS.

Sad news. Them things mean business when they bite. Glad it's too cold for them up here.

Sorry to hear that Lynn, Timber Rattlers (and many others like our very own cotton back rattle moccasins!) are abundant here.  You be careful yourself.  Hope all else is well.

When I read the title I thought this was gonna be another exciting episode of WV Sawmiller's snake hunters...

The only venomous snake here is the Western Rattlesnake which is seldom seen. They are normally very shy and avoid human contact although they will strike if provoked. Occasionally a curious dog gets bitten.

Dogs can't leave a snake alone and if it's bitten on the nose, not much of anything can save it.

I've had 3 dogs snake bit. None have died, guess I've been lucky. This one was my doberman.

Last one was about 15 years ago when I had a weiner dog get bit right over the eye. Thought for sure he wasn't going to make it. Head swelled up about double in size. He got over it with the vets help, but I think he died an early death because of it.

Would be terrible loosing any pet to a snake bite.

I think @Nebraska knows about these things. If he could input what to do in case a dog gets bit would be appreciated.
