Hi All,
I am starting to cut and joint my first timber frame assembly. I'm concerned about the drying process and the kink created by. My timber aren't dry (I don't have the humidity meausrement), they've been cuted and milled 2 years ago (mostly 8''X10''X16', grey pine). I've worked all winter to plan and correct the mill cut. I was really surprised last month to see the actual kink (I don't know if it's the right expression, the timber has twisted). I'm able to correct them, but I'm concerned about making joinery and rising the structure. In fact, I plan 1 month of work (partial time) before rising it. So my question is, will I be able to do the joinery without the timbers twisted agin or should I wait (and cut the joinery next spring ? And what strategy/timelime with green wood ?

I sure the subject must have been covered before, I appreciate your help (and your comprehension about my english)

Hello Philoufelin,

A little more information could help this question get answered better, like what is the wood species? What are the dimensions?

In my limited experience and reading, my guess is that if those timbers have sat for two years since they were milled, they're probably pretty stable at this point unless you really change the stresses on them in the joinery and restacking steps. You should be good to go ahead and cut and raise your frame, correcting for any twist or bow they've already got, of course.

Good luck, and happy raising

Hi,

The species is mainly grey and red pine. I corrected the twist and I ordered end grain sealer. I read that should prevent twist and cracks by slowing down the drying process. I'm biulding and house extension of 12'x16'. The timber dimension is 8''X12''x12' or 16'.

Thanks for the answer !
