It's been a long time since I wrote anything here but felt I wanted to share my latest movie.
See what you think about this simple debarker.

@teed

Welcome back. Its been a while since I remember seeing you here.

Interesting device. Yes, I don't think it would work as well as mine with my motor and spinning blade but it sure does look like a good idea for the price and simplicity. I wonder how long the teeth last and was a little concerned when I saw it move from one tooth to the next when it hit a particularly hard spot.

Will it fit other brands beside Logosol? I wonder how much it would take to adapt it to other brands. Does it reduce the width of your cut any?

    Thanks for posting.

Thanks !
I don't know how long the teeth last. I have probably sawn around 150 logs and can not see that any tooth is worn. It should spin a little bit to climb over twigs and not get stuck and destroy any teeth.

Guess that it is easy to mount on other sawmills as long as it has a very steady blade guard. It may take 1/4 of the cut width

Thanks for posting this. I'm very interested and will likely retrofit one on my LT15 or make one. I see they're $370 US but on back order. Who knows - maybe none have made it across the Atlantic yet...

They released it 3-4 weeks ago, so guess they have not come over the sea yet.

I'm curious how it will perform on thick or heavy bark like hickory. Have you tried it on more mature or hardwood logs?
It's obviously not as effective as a driven debarker but if it removes 90% that will be a big improvement.

As a minimum, this will have a positive effect on the path of the blade. Some differences in different species as the bark varies.

Unfortunately, we do not have hickory in Sweden. But I have cut lots of white oak and elm with good results

Looks interesting.
Is your mill power feed or do you push it manually?
If manual, do you notice added effort to push?

I would call it a bark cleaner more than a debarker.
Either way, I'm sure it will help increase blade life.
Change is hard....
Especially when a jar full of it falls off the top shelf and hits your head!

Local wind direction is determined by how I park my mill.

TreefarmerNN

If it becomes available in the US, I'll buy one and try to figure out what I need to do to make it work on a Woodmizer.  It shouldn't be that hard, lol.

Looks like better than no debarker.  Who says good ideas have be complicated?  I like it for the simpler mills, and the price point should be right.

I have Power feed on my sawmill, I have tested it on a push mill to and I didn't notice any difference.
Logosol call it PreCutter, I call it debarker in my video outer wise no one will click on the video :)

Pretty ingenious. I'm doubtful it would cut completely through my ponderosa pine bark. It's an inch or more thick on my bigger logs. However, I could definitely see the benefit in it kicking out gravel before my blade find it!

I can see it being quite an advantage to none at all, and especially to those who custom build their mills. Looks like it should be an easy enough set-up for most DIY's to accomplish in their designs or to retrofit on their current mills. I can see this or variants of it being built and used in the future.

I thought about fabricating one. You'd need to use harden able steel for the wheel or hardened and cut it with an abrasive wheel. You'd have to order and try multiple struts to find the ideal rate - same with the spring on the wheel. Not difficult but a time commitment.
If you can just order one, that R&D time has already been done.

I'm thinking of maybe trying a 7-1/4" ripping blade, carbide with enough of a kerf to more than cover the band blade's kerf. You'd also want one with out too many teeth to have a decent size gullet. I'm already starting to get some ideas flowing through the ol' noggin.
