Resonator.  The last time I had a pile of logs that neatly stacked was when my wife was on the landing giving me directions.  ffcheesy

Resonator, That is a beautiful pine. It is very satisfying to get a lot of logs from one tree. Nice stack of logs, should keep you busy for a while.

Still cutting on the edge of the field. This one a red oak.

That rule is 16 inches long so the tree was about 15" at the stump. As you can see I used a bore cut because the tree was a leaner.

The worst thing about cutting trees down into a field is...

all those branches have to be moved off the field.

Keep on cutting.....Cutter

I have a OWB that will take a 54 inch stick. I cut all my limbs down as big as my thumb and use them to heat the hot water in the summer time.
Then I run the bush hog through the limbs. I have a brush pile that is 10 feet tall, I have no idea how deep and about 20 feet long. This is from cutting trees on the meadow. I don't save many limbs from those trees. Most are small limbs, no bigger then a couple inches.
There are trees on the side and the back of this pile. No way to burn it. In a few more years of cutting the meadow, I will be right next to the brush pile.
Some limbs along the field are 6-8 inches across.
Your edge of the field looks like mine with  rayrock that I see.
I have been working on the edge for years. I cut out the small stuff.
But I have been spraying vegetation killer there for years. Poison ivy grows on the edge of the field. My Father sprayed it for years. But I did it every year. I think I might have it under control. It can be kinda hard to kill it under trees. Seems to take more time to kill it in the woods then in the open.
I had one place that I sprayed for 3 years, in the open and I killed it.
We bought back some of The Farm and there was a stone wall that was covered in it. I kept that wall barren for 3 years and I got rid of the poison ivy. I hauled off the stone wall and we mow it now.

Keep on cutting.

No Magic. The brush pile is off the field, I'll just let it rot right there.
Massachusetts has very restrictive burning laws and I don't want to deal with their silly burning permits. There is not much common sense in the state house in Boston.

It's like that here in Eastern Ontario too.  Most municipalities have gone nuts with their burning bylaws.  I do the same thing: pile 'er up and let gravity and nature do their thing.  It's amazing how a few winters of normal snowfall compress things.

Though it makes the falling easier, it is often best to not fall the trees on to the farmer's clean field. They are very particular about having any slash left on their clean fields that might lessen some of their acreage for crop use.

Total clean-up of the slash along the field's edge to the farmer's liking can make for a lot of added work to the timber harvest.

Get woken up for a 2hr "rescue" this morning, little boat with a decent sized crane barge lost a clutch coming in, we are about the only actual "real boat" around besides a Z-drive. Sitting in Providence doing maintenance, can about see the "Wonderland" from here 😆🤦.

Barge,

I had to zoom in to make sure that Kobelco wasn't in permanent re-gen mode!

It's nice that you guys do paint by numbers on the pipes in the boat. Is that something to make maintenance easier?

Is the red R2D2 deal an oil filter?  Looks like a bunch of filter elements inside it.

Trying to stay away from anything DEF, I think there's 3x pieces and 1x truck right now with it. They want the boats color coded and labeled so if someone hops on, but there is no industry standard so it varies a bit. 80+ boats here and only a few are the same. Filter pot, 14x cartridges, every 14-1500 hrs. Only change oil if it comes back hot or an issue, samples every month. The regular guy here is one of the longest employees here, paygrade of his own, not in a rush to retire but I'm going to be his replacement at somepoint. I've got till probably May 7th, take 3-4wks off for baby, boats and only boats unfortunately, OnlyFans page hasn't take off yet.

Lots of 8s and 10s on this small lot of EWP.

@leeroyjd

What's your market for 8s and 10s? Up in my area commercial mills won't buy those lengths and if they do automatically graded pallet... smiley_thumbsdown
Even though that's where the majority of.clear lumber will be milled.

Nice piles what's making those?

leeroyjd

@chep Local mill  is buying all the pine and uses the low grade for pallets.

I have a dilemma

I have a pile of eucalyptus logs. 18" up to 36", mostly kinda stubby. It's very difficult to dry without cracking. It's a lot less fun to cut once dry. Summer is upon me. The only use I've found for it besides firewood is milling it green and screwing it down green as truck and trailer decking. Closest sawmill is a couple hours away. I have a 60" Alaskan but not the time or desire to cut that much. I could try covering with a tarp for summer...or just have a saw party and mow it all into firewood to dry and crack for a year or two and then split. I just hate to see it go to firewood. I have some conexes I could store it in. Out of sun and wind but super hot. Lot of work. I've heard leaving it in a pond will stabilize it, but I don't have a pond...

I haven't been able to get out in the woods since the end of January - too much snow, and I am behind in firewood. Monday and Tuesday were suddenly in the 50's and we lost a lot of the snow. Knowing it was going to cool off for 3 days I went out yesterday and broke a trail through a maple stand that needs some TLC.

The weather cooperated and it was 18* this morning. The trail set up solid. It was still below freezing when I quit at noon. I'm cutting the junk and thinning around the better trees. Smallish wood but all hard maple.

Tomorrows weather will be similar they stay.
