Ralph Plumridge

Hi all, im a young carpenter currently finishing my 3rd year of apprenticeship in Site Carpentry.

Over the past couple years ive been planning to build a small cabin (7x4m). I intend to erect a timber frame structure using wattle and daub to infill the frames walls. Ive studied all I can over the past year aiming to build my cabin with natural, sustainable materials, prioritising breathability over straight insulation values and 'air tightness'.
After drawing many sketches and then consulting with my father to thoroughly calculate all imposed loads upon my structure. we were able further refine my frame design.

Although we've gained comparatively good understanding of the materials to be used, their limits and kinds of forces the building will be subject to, our limited experience in actually having built such a structure leaves me feeling the need for a 'look over' by a more experienced individual who can offer advice/criticism on my design.

NOTE:
My cabin (outbuilding) has been designed to conform to UK planning restrictions ensuring compliance with UK permitted development regulations.

- 4x7m base
- 2.5m to top plate (eaves)
- 4m to top of roof apex
- 600mm gable over hang, 500mm eaves overhang.
- local winds up to 70mph
- Clay tiles for roof covering
- wall infilled with wattle and daub (Not cladded)
- No excessive live loads.
- C24 Larch is to be used for most members

I recently received a quote for my cutting list from my local sawmill and it was a little more than I was hoping for. I am now trying to further refine the design aiming to reduce cost in timber;

- Does it seem ive over engineered sizes of certain members? Which ones?
- Are any critical elements / bracings missing?

Any comments, criticism and suggestions to improve my design are greatly appreciated!
Please see the attached gallery links for a few drawn plans (I hope theyve uploaded correctly first time posting) ask for more details if necessary !
