Yeah, I've seen laptops with that. The battery was non-removable (without a screwdriver), so there was no easy way to power down the machine completely. A toothpick in the hole disconnected the internal battery and allowed a full reset. 

I had a similar machine from a client, it just sat there with a black screen no matter what you did with the power button, but no external hard reset option. I picked it up, hoping that a battery out reset would clear it. By the time I got it on the desk it was 0% battery, and rebooted fine. But I wonder how many have been scrapped for a similar glitch?

It would be like throwing away your chainsaw because you flooded it?
