just spending time in the hospital. Ended up with up with rhabdomyolysis. Short of it, trying to work in the attic, had a heat stroke, fought my way out a way and fell.  Three guys working on the place, coincidently one named Angel, drug my donkey down the ladder where an ambulance waited, then to local ER then to Houston.  Heat and over activity (you would think an old fart would know that) caused thigh muscles to fail, muscles die, release internal stuff and can clog kidneys causing kidney damage and potentially failure and death.  So, I am in St Lukes with an IV and drugs and a 10-minute break between commode attendances.  They think they got it, but the next shoe,,,,,

DanG  Get better soon, and don't do that again.

I am learning that I do not tolerate the heat and humidity well.
That combined with medicines I take I have to be sure I drink enough water.
If I don't my blood pressure drops when I stand up and I get dizzy/blackout symptoms.
Drinking that much water I have to pee very often.

Wow, but you don't have to be old to pass out on an attic.  I had a neighbor lady run over for help, decades ago, when her 25 year old husband passed out from the heat, when putting insulation in the attic.

I am very glad you made it out and hopefully have a full recovery.

How are you doing today?

Thanks folks, doing better, losing blood for all the draws they take, and lots of short trips to the necessarian.  Kinda weak I guess from the muscle damage and sore from laying around for three days.

Treatment is rest, fluids, bicarbonate and monitoring.  We have myoglobin in our muscles to store oxygen about like hemoglobin in our red blood cells.  when you lyse either one (destroy and open up) they release the protein and Iron molecule.  in small amounts this is reabsorbed and reused.  in larger amounts the iron is toxic to nephrons (kidneys).  heat, crush injury, extreme exercise like marathons, etc. can all cause this.  Hemolysis is RBCs and rhabdomyolysis is in muscle cells.  the stored O2 in the muscle cells is for bursts of energy for short periods.

It took me a couple of years to recover from a severe case of heat exhaustion.  I had tunnel vision when I finally reached my work truck and managed enough strength to grab the water cask before going down.  I pulled the top off and started drinking and splashing my face, head, and whatever else to cool down.  I was only 25 at the time.  Heat is dangerous!!

You can become somewhat acclimated, as often addressed by the southern grit eaters, vs the glaciated northern tribes.  Many of us that never missed a day at work seem to think we are still the athlete in high school that can overcome all adversity.  That young physical ability withers away as we age and can be a hard mindset to change.  Ot so I have been told. ffsmiley ffsmiley ffsmiley  A well trained marathon runner gets a little rhabdo after every race.  If an elder "falls and cannot get up", laying on the floor all night, we check for rhabdo.
