That huge A tree cutting company is in town and cutting some big trees. After getting the OK from the two neighbors who both thought it was the other guy's tree, I went and got it.

This is my first attempt at loading logs this way. I used a combination of winch it in and up with a come-along and raising and lowering the dump body.

About 8 inches after that picture, my come-along broke ::) So I had to block it up and pick up everything and go find another come-along. Some more raising and lowering the body and winching and it was finally in.

The small end of the log is 24 inches ;D

Pretty short explanation for something that took 4 hours !!!!! Don't even know if it will fit on my mill but I just had to see if I could do this. Now, I think I'll go out and think up an easier way :D

Edit: I changed the title from "Snagged" because that has another meaning .

Nice Log!  Is that Northern Red Oak?

Got to love creativity!  Us sawdust makers sure do come up with ways to get logs home :D

IL Bull

What kind of a tree was it? ???

Thanks, Kirk.

It's White pine. I don't think the dump body weighs quite enough to do that with an oak that big as it is only gravity going down.

I really like thinking up ways to do things like this ;D

A couple more adventures like this and I can be a " Vulture-ette" :D :D

I checked in the Forum toolbox... this eleven foot log weighs 1460  :o

" Vulture-ette" :D :D :D :D :D  That is funny :D :D :D

I would have never guessed that was a pine log.  Is that common in your area?  The white pine we have around us is lucky to make 2x6 boards and rarely a 2x8.

sprucebunny

Yes, Kirk, very common. Just south of here about 30 miles, there is a large stand of W. pine that was marked with the " King's broadarrow " as being designated for ship's masts when the colonies were young.

Now ya get to have fun gettin sticky  :)

I got a shirt that still has stains on it from tailing white pine bout 3 yrs ago been washed  30 or 40 times.   :-\

Get out your can of pop and stick it on the end of the log by May 1st. ;D

That sure was a brute. I bet there was a lot of steam exerted get'n that one loaded. ;D

I have a few of them here to look forward to. What brand truck ?

I am willing to bet it made the truck grunt a little :D

The truck hardly knew anything was going on :D It's a diesel F450 and the dump body is 9' long and 8' wide. Legal load of gravel doesn't faze it a bit ;D 2.5 tons over is hardly noticeable ;D

I made a complete mess of my clothes, Jon, but that's OK 'cause I got them at the dump store !!

SD, yup, plenty of steam..... my back hurts ... but it doesn't matter 'cause I took care of both ends of the log :D

Next project: electric boat winch with a hook at each end, 10k #rolling load, portable. Have the winch ;D

Tim, where's the pics ???

Joan;
For the next one get two pulleys and a good rope.
One end of the rope is anchored to the log, goes to a pulley where you want to put the log then back to another pulley at the log and then you pull on the free end.
If you set it up just like that an eight hundred pound log will only be about 270 lbs.
If you put rollers under the log the pull will be even easier.

Tim L

Nice rig those diesels. I have a 1969 chevy c-30 . She's not the belle of the ball but she works. I am getting punished  for the lack of pictures, if I don't get some up this weekend I may have to go into the relocation program !

I wouldn't have guessed white pine either, looks very different that the ones here

I'm looking for help all the shrinks have given up on me :o

sprucebunny

Kevin, the new come-along came with a block but only ten feet of cable ::)

I have a lonnnng rope with 2 double blocks on it.... that should give some serious mechanical advantage ;D I'll try that if I ever try to snatch anything bigger  :)

That is a nice log!  That story reminds me of the times I would load logs some of them 18" at the small end 8' 6" long in the back of a one ton pick-up.

One thing that really helps that would have worked in your adventure is once you get the end of the log on the back of the truck put a short pice of pipe or round wood about 2" in diameter under the log for it to roll on.  Once you have the log on a roller it takes far less force to move it.

Of course over coming gravity to get the end of the log on the truck is the first major feat.  The size of the truck you have is nice however the bigger the model number the higher they are off the ground.  My cousin had one about that size which had a swing arm with a boat winch mounted on the rear corner.  He could raise the log with the winch then swing most of it in the truck on the first try.

I am sure that if figured out how to get this one loaded the next one will go easier.

You want at least 3:1 with the pulley at the log to rove the same as your come-a-long but the line needs to be anchored on the load and not at the come-a-long.
The rope winches (maasdam) are better suited for this.

RSteiner

I just purchased one of those rope pullers.  I was planning on using it for other things, it's good to know that there is another use for it.

Kevin's setup will definately make the job easier but each time you add a pulley, the speed will drop.

JimBuis

The speed may drop, but compared to four hours loading that log it would still be an improvement. ;)

Dragging it over to the back of the truck and getting it on the tailgate is what took the most time. I didn't rush it, as I didn't want any mistakes. I had to use chunks of branches they'd cut to block it up and reset the chain and come-along several times and I REALLY didn't want it rolling unexpectedly  :o

Forgive me for asking....... why did you put it in the truck instead of on a trailer?

isawlogs

Furby ... Its a wimine  thing dont go there .  ;)

Joan  ,  did you get it on the mill yet , I'll bet the backhoe is going to be helping with the removal  :)

Do you have plans for the wood yet .
Great job , nice log , what happenned to the rest of the tree .  ??? Are you going back for more .
