What happened to the elm tree that fell on the White House Lawn? Anyone on the forum located in the area? That would make an interesting story.

I imagine someone from the lawn maintenance company brought a chainsaw from home and the tree is stacked in 18" pieces on the corner of Pennsylvania Ave. waiting for the trash truck or someone looking for free firewood. Ha! The new $20's will have a sign on the lawn next to where the tree was that says "Free Firewood". The lettering will probably be tamper proof too. :D

I have a friend in DC that works for the patent office and is a turner. The Capital Area turners are one of the largest clubs in the country and I assure you that most of that wood will be used as turnings or something. There have been other trees taken down around the White House and other monuments and they all have been recycled into furniture and turnings. I visited him a couple of years ago and the trees there are unbelieveable.........Burls...Burls...Burls.....I had all I could do to not run out and buy a saw while I was there :D :D :D :D

They do saw the wood, but at a maintainence location....but sawing on the White House lawn would be fun ....wouldn't it ??? ??? ???

Set the mill up and get Mr. Bush to rearrange his schedule so that he could off-bear and Rumsfeld could lay the stickers and Mr. Cheney could fix the tea and sandwich's and Miz Rice could run the chainsaw and skidder and Marine One could hover at 500 feet and keep everything cool.

I'd even do it on shares. :D :D

Ya know knowing Mr Bush if you could get his attention to this he'd probably do it. Wouldn't that be a hoot, bet he'd like running a sawmill.

Not so sure of the rest of em though. :D

I don't know if it would be much fun sawing with all those guns on the roof pointed in my direction. :D

Many years ago I was in Ames, IA when Nikita Kruschev came to visit. Two local high school students put on heavy overcoats and carried violin cases under their arms when they approached the crowds. Course they did have violins in the cases, but it was in the summer and it was very hot. One of them said after they were hauled away they had never seen so many guns in all their lives when they were taken away. ;D

Those guys were lucky they were not charged with anything, probably because one was the son of a well known Doctor. I doubt if anyone would be so lucky in these times as I am sure the Secret Service has no sense of humor.

I was in Ames at that time too. Guess I recall seeing the film of 4 guys snaking their way through the crowd, but could be mistaken. Around '59 or '60. (edit: found this reference Nikita Visits Iowa State Univ )
That entourage (?) from Russia came to Madison after Ames on that trip, and a man I came to know later was a Russian-born refugee from Russia, being in the Revolutionary War as a White Russian. He was working for the Univ. of Wisconsin at the time and because he knew Russian, he was asked to join the UW University welcoming group while the Russians were visiting Madison.
Interestingly, the Russians would not believe Dimitri when he told them that the cars seen on the trip were owned by the citzens, and they were not being transported ahead just to be seen by the tour on the next stop. There were many things these Russians learned from Dimitri, and after the trip the State Dept. sent a message that the Russians demanded that Dimitri never be on another tour with Russians.

Dimitri wrote of his life escaping from the Red Russians in the 30's, hiding in Poland, and then managing to stay alive during WWII as he was a Russian enemy to the Germans, and a White Russian enemy to the Red Russians. He sent his wife and three daughters into Germany to fare the best they could, while he was imprisioned by the Germans. After the war, he found his family through a US refugee location station and then made his way to the US to become a US citizen. There was one man who was very proud to pay his state, federal, and property taxes in the USA.
