Thought some of you might be interested in what I've been keeping busy with. It's not timber framing, but thought it should be here.

I started on my 16 x 24 storage shed/wood shop. It will be two levels with a gambrel style roof and a couple of lean to sheds on the sides. This is what I've got done so far.

Looking good Stew. Are thoe 4X4's sitting on blocks, sitting on pads?

Olen, the post are sitting on DekBlocks and 16 x16 x 4 pads. My ground turns to hard clay withing the first 8 inches so I compacted and leveled the area the pads are sitting on.

I used the same setup for my sawshed except I sawed 6X6's and profile the bottoms to fit the blocks. Worked real good.

Don, I wanted to saw my own posts, but I don't have enough extentions to get the lenth I needed, so I went the treated, box store route on the posts. After I finish the floor joists, I plan to frame the walls to get the second level floor joists in, then the roof rafters and the tin. Then I can start on the floors and siding.

QuoteI wanted to saw my own posts, but I don't have enough extentions to get the lenth I needed,

There is a method used to saw long stuff on short beds, but it involves a little waste unless the logs are small dia.

Say you want to saw a post and the log is hanging off the end. Go ahead and make the first cut as far as your bed will let you. Cut the slab off with the chainsaw and flip to side #2 and do the same thing. Do all 4 sides this way. Now you have half a log and half a post.  ::)

Slide the log onto the bed and let part of the post hang off this time. You'll have to block up on the bottem where the flat post is over the bed with some 2X's or something to keep the round log from hanging up on the bed. When the flat post cut  is level with the bed, lower the blade to the post cut and continue cutting the log.

It may take a few slide-a-longs to to complete a flat from one end to the other, but it will be straight.  ;)

Olen, that seems like a lot of extra work. I plan to put down permanent 30 foot rails on my place when I get some of the other projects out of the way. The shed is priority so I don't have to spend so much time loading and unloading tools to go out and work. It will also provide tractor shelter and sawmill shelter until I can get my saw shed built. Once the shed is finished, I can leave them there. Plus, the wife says we need more space for storage of everything else.  ;) I've been accused of building my own dog house, so to speak.  :D

Oooooh,  you better nip it in the bud while you got a chance. I didn't, and now I've lost my hide out. I never know when I'll come home and find a pile of stuff from the house in the doorway of my shop. The message is loud and clear. This belongs out here, not in the house.  :-\

Stew, I looked you up on the map. You live about 125 miles due west of me. Let me know when you are going to do some major framing and if our schedules match, I can scoot over and help you out. In the last three years I have done plenty of framing and building on my own house and some sheds. I have to do a lot of work by myself and I know how nice it is to have a extra set of hands.    Don

Don, I really appreciate the offer, and I will keep it in mind. I have been blessed with two wonderful daughter, but no sons, so like you, I have had to learn to do a lot of things by myself. So far, the only help I have had on this project is my wife holding the dumb end of the tape to help get everything squared up.

I will extend the same offer to you as well.

Here is an update on my progress.

I managed to get the subfloor down and covered before the predicted rain comes in.

The next step is the walls, followed by the support beams for the second floor.

I also have the rear wall and two beams up, but no pictures yet. I ran out of time to take pictures.

It has been a month since my last update, so here it is. I have been busy...and COLD!!!

I have to get the end wall framed before I can finish up the roof lathing. I've still got a ways to go, but I can see daylight at the end of the tunnel now.  :D

This one is of my own design. I plan to build two more barns in the future, both 36 x 60. My wife changed her mind on the kind of house we would have when she saw the roof design on the shed. One of the barns will be our house and the other will be our garage, my shop, and storage. Women...

Looking good Stew  8)
Sketch her some gambrel dormers in the house roof, and cuss me come framing time  ;D.

We live in heavier snow area, mine is similar but framed a little different because of the increased roof load. The sidewalls are balloon framed full height with the second floor joists resting on a ledger giving the same kneewall upstairs. The long studs can withstand more thrust than a pony wall when a roof gets heavy. I was also concerned about thrust at the upper pitch break and didn't need the high clearspan so I put collar ties across that area and made a flat ceiling with a small attic space. Just another way to do a similar barn  :).

Radar67

Don, I plan to order a set of plans from barnplans.com ... they have the dormer plans as well...she has already seen them and insists on them.  :) I really like the truss design from this site and the plans show you how to build them on a jig onsite.

We have no snow load here. The pony walls are only 12 inches high and each side has four posts that are connected with the final top plate which is a 2x6. The joints in the roof trusses all have a 5/8 plywood truss tie on each side (except the outside ends, the sheathing will cover them) with 20 + nails in each one. I may put collar ties on the peaks, about a foot down from the bottom of the ridge. I am planning to put 45 degree braces on each end from the ridge to the outside walls and am considering putting angle braces in the gable ends, from the first truss joint to the center of the wall at floor level. The stair stringers will also serve as the angle brace on the front wall (opposite the existing brace just to the left of the door). My mind is turning those wheels... ;D

Radar67,
Your frame reminds me of this neglected barn I pass each day...

I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

Radar67

That looks more like a barn in progress than a neglected one.  ;) It would also be a good project to move and restore.  :)

It really is in great shape, considering.  Yesterday I noticed the beginings of a new developement on the adjacent property.  Unfortunately, it won't be long before this barn is gone.  Maybe I will stop by and ask a few questions.

Time for another update...I've been busy the last 20 days. I work on this about three days a week. I have the back wall and one side wall sheathed and all but 2 sheets of tin on the roof. (got to get a brick scaffold out there)

I figure a couple more days sheathing on the bottom sections, then I'll move on to the gabel ends. At least the floors are dry now.  ;D

Sure does  ;) This one will eventually have a porch on it, along with a lean to on each side. The wife has decided once our house is built, this will become a guest house/cabin.  ::)
