Every time we get a stiff East wind trees start falling.
They can take a West wind much better.

sprucebunny

The same thing is true here, Kevin.

The trees seem to be used to the west winds but not as prepared for the others.

Here's a picture of the limb from up the stick where I was rigging the block.

Is that a phone wire? Ours are under ground

You need more white spuce trees. When the CCC planted, back in the"30"s, they used the spruce for wind cotrol. Planted them around the red pine plantains and on hills. They make good cover for the wildlife too. (wildlife)-- beer parties in the woods and things like that. 8) 8)

Yes, that's a communications cable.
There's a clear cut right there so the wind had a chance to pick up speed crossing that area.

Coon

So in other words that tree should have been removed when the clear cut was done.  People far too often don't realize that  certain tree species will do this when other shelter trees are removed for various reasons.

They left about a one hundred meter buffer, the top is completely gone on this one but it was included bark combined with the wind that caused the branch failure.

Coon

Ok I understand a bit better now.   :)  On our farm we tend to find that this happens if we leave a lone tree out in the open.  We have been clear cutting certain areas (pockets) due to red rot in the spruce and leaving any trees that look healthy.   At times the whole tree goes over with the root ball and all.

Every time we have an south east wind here, I smell the sulfur off the pulp mill. The smell of money, as they say in the business. ;)

Yup we get some strange smells here when the wind is from the south east.  There is an anhydrous ammonia plant a couple of miles out of town and when the wind blows it sometimes smells like rotten socks. :-[

I grew up in a paper town.I know what money smells like.Trees need other trees to hold them out when trees are cut out around them. When the paper company cut the plantion pine off up on top of the hill, some trees were left.A few months later a bad wind storm came through.Too bad that had to happen.Just can't tell what will happen. Some up rooted, some broke off and some was leaning.
Had a small tree just above my driveway do that. But this was the for the power. We was just getting home and the Chesterville fire truck went by the road that we was just about to turn on.There is only 2 houses on this road and they went right on by.The town line is just ahead, they must be heading towards Fayette. The truck starts to slow down to turn on to my road. Not good.I speed up to catch up to them a little.I can see a truck at the old farm house.Than the fire truck turns into my driveway and stops.I jump out all concerned and tell thm this is my place, what is wrong?Just a small tree smoking on a live wire.We still had power.Power company came by around 10 that night to remove the tree.

This limb should have snapped the pole from the distance it fell.
These are class seven poles not much bigger than fence posts in diameter.
It did pull one over a bit but no sign of tension on the pole.

Did any dial upr's try the video?
Just wondering what the download time was like?

Furby

Not on dial up, but did watch it. :)
What helmet cam are you using and how well do you like it, if I may ask?

Thinking of replacing Boob cam?  :D

Furby

Remember, the Boob cam was tossed together at the last minute using things on hand. ;)
One advantage the Boob cam had, was that I could move my head without messing up the cam too much.
It was when I turned backwards that I would mess up the Boob cam.
So replacing it wouldn't exactly be my intentions. ;D

Kevin

Furby, 'the camera is the Oregon ATC-2K.
First time I used it but I didn't have any problem with it.
The original file has better clarity than the youtube version.
The mic is protected by foam and the foam can be removed to better the sound if needed.

Nice show, Kevin.

Made my knees tremble just watching it  :D

You know, for an elderly gent you do alright  :D

Who cares bout the stoopid trees falling over in the wind...they musta been a poor specimans. :(

Here is what is most important about an east wind.  Wind from the east, fish bite the least.  Wind form the north, do not go forth.  Wind from the west, fish bite the best.  Wind from the south, blows bait in there mouth.

So, iffen ya gotta work guess maybe the best time is during an east wind...cause the fish ain't biting anyhow. ;D

Hey Kevin, I remember climbing class nine...hooks went in one side and the point came out the other.  Just thought I would add thoughts from a has been phone man that never wants to see another pole...much less climb one. :(

Kevin

oww, did you ever cut that hanger down?

Larry, class 9 eh? I can't imagine a pole that small, not much room on the stick for a pair of boots!

I found a few more yesterday from the same wind, a couple of twenty inch spruce, nice healthy trees snapped off about five feet off the ground.

OneWithWood

Kevin,

Not yet.  It got relegated a bit lower on the priority list when cost share became available for invasive species erradication.  It will eventually get taken down.

That was a lot of wind to brake a spruce tree. They can take a lot of wind that why they made the sruce goose out of spruce. ::)

Spruce Goose was laminated wood structure, mostly birch, I believe.

SwampDonkey

Yeah only 10 -12% of the wood was spruce.

I remember some documentaries on WWI planes as well that used veneer birch. A lot of the birch was sent from here to Europe to make planes. A lot of gliders where made from such plywood in WWII as well.
