Need some help !
« on: July 27, 2001, 04:57:47 PM »
I am working on the supplement that will be sent to the schools for the Tree of hope project. I am struggling with some verbage on this section. I don't want it to sound too.. lets say pro anything.

HELP!

Note to Educator:[/b]

The Sustainable Forestry webpage contest is an opportunity for a class or group to work together utilizing many individual talents and interests. It will be an opportunity to learn new skills in a medium that is of high interest to Michigan's high school students. The most exciting part is, the project will allow all of those involved to learn the importance of protecting, managing, utilizing and sustaining one of Michigan's greatest resources, It's Forests!

Of course the first step will be for the students to develop an understanding of the principles of sustainable forestry. We have included links to many resources to help achieve this at the Tree of Hope website www.holidaytree.org Just look for the education link!

There is an opportunity to involve students in many areas of development in this project, here are just a few:

  • Project coordination
  • Research and Development
  • Photography
  • Graphic Designlist
  • Web Design
  • Web Programming
  • Web Publishing
  • We know you will find many more as your project gets underway!

Get ready for this question from the students...
5) What do they do with the tree after Christmas?

I just know they`ll say how can you say you`re protecting the forest,  practicing conservation and preaching sustainability when you`re cutting a tree down that will be used for a decoration for only a few days?

The habitat thingy was a good idea.

Jeff,

That's a good question and students do ask it. In West Virginia during the Monongahela Controversy on clearcutting we planted 3 trees for the one Bicentennial Christmas Tree removed.

I'm sure the Ottawa NF will be doing something similar, but know the answer. Check with their Public Affairs Officer. Teachers will also want to pass such info along to the students.

Yes, the habitat for humanity program is a vital part of this in my opinion. I have already delt with that question a couple times (and were not hardly started). And when you say it will be processed into building materials for these homes, it seems to make a real difference. I think if the answer was that it is chipped and goes to the land fill, it would be the end of interest. But with the habitat answer, it seems to promote more interest in the first parts of the program once they know about the happy ending!

Maybe change last sentence as follows:

----the importance of "forest land stewardship" in managing, utilizing, and sustaining one of Michigan's greatest "renewable" resources, It's Forests!

Jeff,

I might be off base with this idea, but hear me out please.

I have a question on your Tree of Hope project.  What happens to the tree when it eventually comes down in Washington?  I saw in one post that there is a possibility of it being milled and used in the Habitat for Humanity program.  This is all well and good.  But I think the amount of useable lumber will be very negligable from the tree.  Wouldn't a better use be to promote the lumber coming from the tree, and then offer the lumber for sale as "This is the wood from the National Christmas Tree, that came from Michigan."

Many people would love the opportunity to have a piece of this lumber.  So why not mill it and sell it either on Ebay or thru the Michigan Forestry Dept.  then use the proceeds to buy seedlings, to reforest parts of your forests.  You could have some kind of a statewide contest for the Highschool kids, winners of the contest get the seedlings to plant in the choosen forest.

You could do something like,  "The Tree of Hope Supports Sustainable Forestry"

Just a thought.

Roger ;D

Rog,
In part, I suspect that`s why they call it the tree of hope.
It`s gives people the chance to have a roof over their head and some hope for the future.
To sell the wood, would create a sense of commercialism and take away from the thought of giving a gift at Christmas time.
Every class that participates should be given a few seedlings that could be planted on or near school grounds to commemorate the event and serve as a reminder in years to come.

Roger, First I am far below any decision making on anything more then boxers or briefs. :D

I do think that any commercialism would be a turn off. I think most people will realize that 1 tree will not build many homes. But it will touch thousands. I don't know exactly what will be milled from the tree as yet, but I hope it is something that the eventual home owner can point at with pride and say " This was made from the Tree of Hope, The first U.S. Capital tree of this milennium"

The seedlings that will be grown from this tree will be many, and they will be distributed but I am not sure to whom at this point (Boxers, Briefs, Jeff).

One thing I know, this project has touched me, It has now touched you.

I did not know for sure where to put this, but here works. It has been 18 years ago we were part of this project. If you search tree of hope here there is a lot about it.  I present to you one of the children of this tree.  It stands just a few yards from the forestry forum pig roaster.

Here is the first look at this years capital tree!

It is a 72 ft white spruce

(Image hidden from quote, click to view.)

The tree's location will be kept secret for a while due to security concerns.

It's doing quite well among those oaks. I would have thought it might get suppressed a lot. But they are a little tolerant of shade I guess. :)

I think that option is only Office 360 subscribers. In earlier versions it's to do with file recovery and has a setting for frequency of saves. File/Options/Save
