Hello Jim,

I'm building my first frame and I need some tools!!!!!

I'm cutting out the timbers for a 14x16 garden shed, I'm only doing this in my spare time as a hobby so, bare neccesity . . . . . . . what tools would you recommend I buy from you?

If you go to the timber framing section of the FF (Forestry Forum) you'll see a list of tools suggested for each timber framer to have in a thread called: "Tools for Timber Faming List".

Look at the list, see what you have already, and then draw up a new list of the things you need.

I looked at the list . . . . . . danG that's a lot of tools for just a garden shed.

And since this is my first TF project, I don't have any of the important stuff.

I'm working with 4x8, 6x6 and 4x4 's.

I don't have any TF chisels and my saw is probably too small.
I do have a milwaukee right angle drill and big bits.

Here's my guess:

2 inch slick
1 inch corner chisel
Big Al

Depending on your advice, I think I can get away with the milwaukee for boring holes but I would like to have a Makita beam saw.

WoodDean, be careful using that Milwaukee for boring holes. I bought one of their right angle drills a few years ago to do just what you want to do, and I ran into a little problem. The chuck on my drill is held on with a left-hand threaded screw...you can see it if you look inside the chuck. If you bore too deep and get a lot of wood shavings on top of the bit, it will bind up when you try and back it out and the screw will snap. It really doesn't take much to snap it, and since it's a left-hand thread I had to buy new ones from the local Milwaulkee repair place, and they aren't cheap (as far as machine screws go anyway

). I had to back off quite often for the first hole, and then overlap a little extra to give the shavings someplace to go. Those right angle drills must be made to drill through holes $:-\$

I need to get around to buying one of those boring machines from Jim one of these days

Funny you mentioned that . . . . . . .

I just got my drill back from the repair shop . . . . . . and guess what I had done???!!???

I was drilling holes in some floor joist with a 2 inch hole saw to run water lines in the basement, I was just about to drill the last hole when the chuck fell off.

. . . . . . I guess that means more business for Jim!!!!

Now that I thought about it some more, I think the chuck on my drill is threaded, and screws onto the drill. Using it to go "in" a hole tightens the chuck, but when you try and run in reverse, the chuck starts to screw off, and this is what knocks the head off of that special screw

I bought a 2" chisel, 3" slick and a corner chisel from Jim. All were used but in excellent shape and sharpened to a razor sharp edge. I've never bought a new tool that was sharpened as well.
I also got a rock(?) maple mallet from them, very nice.
I have been making wood splinters out of some 8x8 hemlock beams with these tools. Hope to have some pics in the spring.

Keep your eyes open for large and heavy 14" blade draw knifes. Preferably White or Greenlee. Interested in purchasing.
