DVD mpeg-2 decoder

I'm trying to watch a DVD on my XP and it says I need a DVD decoder... now my computer just returned from DAktech and they installed a DVD player. 

Where do I get A decoder and is it something like the old decoder rings ;D ;D ;D

The DVD drive should have come with a program, maybe called Power DVD or Cyberlink DVD player?

Sounds like the Techie forgot to install it.

You should be able to just put the disc in, install the software and it will take care of the decoder codec for you.

Try VLC (Video Lan Client) Media Player it can play most video sources without additional codecs (coder decoders)

mpeg2 is the video codec for regular DVD

That's what I use too (VLC) windows media player has too many bugs in it.

thank you guys I've got it up and running and it works well.  I like asking the "experts" here first before I download some "not so free bug loaded program".

It just bothers me that the latest greatest windows player doesn't play DVD's

I've book marked VLC for future reference. I'll snag it over night and try it here. I have a player, but it's choppy. Could be virus scanner related, don't know.
