Had Fun Today!!
« on: December 09, 2010, 07:45:49 PM »
Two 30" diameter red oak logs for a friend who couldn't be there because he has a day job ( 8) 8) 8))  to be cut into 6-13" wide 1-1/8" boards for flooring use.   Was by myself.  Set up on the top log looking forward to a relaxing good time.  First cut oriented a hollow branch stub vertical and 3 foot into my first cut  ZING ZING ZING ZING   as I went through the hollow stub.  Then the blade started to dive.  All the teeth stripped clean off.  To make a long story short the hollow in the stub was frozen full of a mixture of ice and gravel rocks the size like one might have in a driveway.  Broke the tip off of a Barr framing chisel digging it all out.    And this was about 20 feet in the air, in a tree which was about 15 feet into the wood, down the bank a ways.   What the ***?   I know his two sons and I am currently blaming this on one of them.   Squirrels don't do that unless they walk on two hind legs.

Anyway then the top half of the top log about 12x12 was full of ants.  I cut out 250 BF of decent wood out of this log 10' long 30" diameter.    The butt log was 12' and very nice.  got 495  BF out of that for a total  of 745 BF.   Too bad after I cut it into two large cants did I see hydraulic fluid squirting out of the hose to my clamp.   A friend stopped by and noticed that the hose to the top of the clamp had somehow gotten trapped below the clamp arm so that when it was moved to the far right it was being stretched to the point it was ripped.  Anyway a great phone call assistance from Wood-Mizer got my parts on the way, and I was able to finish the job and get out of there by dark, without using the up-down action of the clamp.

Home and happy now it's over.  I like to get UPS packages and this one was $30 for the new hydraulic line and another $30 for a gallon of fluid.   Thanks to WM as usual.

Reminds me of the old story about the fella who was buying Crecent wrenches for $8 and selling them for $5.  Says he can't keep any in stock because they are selling like hotcakes.  His friend asked, "How do you expect to make money doing that?"  To which the answer came, "I can't, but it beats sawmilling!" :D

Just very glad this job was only 3 miles from home.  And that I was able to finish without use of my clamp.  Got a taste of "manual mill operation".

I can picture those two boys with their slingshots sling_shot  and pockets full of rocks betting who can hit the hole.   ;)

But, it doesn't take but one to ruin a blade.   ;D

Should have used my yellow handled cheapies.  Had no idea there were rocks 20 feet high, maybe wasn't thinking clearly but thought maybe this is ice and some kind of dirt mixture.  It was just a small chip off the tip of the new edge I had just put on.  Got the black stone recently on my Tormek will fix it in no time.

One of them is the youth pastor at my church going to investigate what kind of delinquent past he has.
