  I do not know which one of you boys up North left the door open and blew the pilot light out but this is not funny.  Twice today I had to pry frozen logs up off of my saw deck.  I had to put anchor seal on my deck to kee the cants from freezing to it.  Now someone close the door and light the stove!

Snowed and blowed all day today and only got just a fuzz off zero.  Hard to tell how much snow we got as it all blew around into piles.  I can't tell the temp right now because the thermometer is dusted over and no I'm not going out to knock the snow off it.  At least the snow has tapered off 8).

Spent an hour this am (4:00--5:00) de-icing the car to take the wife to work. Heard several large Dougla-fir trees and  probably a few deciduos branches breaking and coming down. Waiting for light so I can go see how the neighbors faired.  Sounded like one may have impacted a building.

Besides, a couple of months ago when you had the severe flooding.........Frank said we would help.........were just keeping our word, as the flooding will start upon melting here in the next couple of days. Know this storm was earmarked for you Canadians, Frank felt sorry for ya and diverted here.

Oops,  I think he did not intend this much tho  :D

You are just about right on that Stephen, for the amt. of white stuff laying around.  The branches are really drooping here this moring as the light of day begins to show through the clouds.  We have had onnly one major bump so far.  This Silver thaw stuff is realy dangerous to have to drive on or through.   :-/

All of the radar and satalite pictrures Ihave seen are showing the storms comeing out of the pinapple country, picking up moisture and moveing up across Northern California and then into Oregon.  I have been thinking of Tillaway, working in the Astoria area at the mouth of the Columbia river and his family still in Northern California and all this bad weather.  The highway people have closed several stretches of our two major highways; I 84 from Portland to Hood River (about 50 miles) and Eugene to Roseburg, on I 5 that runs North and South.
Our temps have warmed to around 28* this morning.  Setting at about 1,000 feet I think we will be a bit later than most in being warmed above freezing today or tomorrow. :'(

I hope you don't get a major silver thaw.We had one about 30 years ago and it was cool to watch the Alder trees crash to the ground like glass sculptures but what a mess afterwards.It took a long time to clean up.

Just think how much money you save on sun screen, bug repellent, and ice for the water jug.  Logs are frozen solidly now making  for more consistent sawing.  I bet Tom is miserable sawing in all that heat and humidity plus having to fight the bugs. :D ;D :D

I had a pleasant breeze today that kept the sawdust out of my eyes and also kept the wind chill in the single digits so I wouldn't get overheated. ;D ;D

I give slabs to the neighbor's cause I don't want to mess with them most of the time.  Another few weeks and I won't have a slab left.

Well it got above freezing today and is to be up to 45 tomorrow.  That's better and clost to normal for us.  I keep telling my self it is only 7 weeks till March.   I am glad that we figured out that it was Paul who made this mess to begin with.  Now please keep that door shut.

Sure it is cold, but I can't believe we didn't keep talking about cheese.  I love cheese, we always talk about food but we never talk about cheese.  Provolone, cheddar, swiss, heck even good old orange or white american.  How about some boursan in the box.  I love cheese. :D :D :D  Grilled cheese, grilled cheese with mustard, onions and tomatoes!

You said it WM1.  I love cheese in all its various forms.  Back in the early 70s I used to belong to a club called Cheese Lovers.  It was sort of like a book club featuring a cheese of the month.  Boy oh boy did I look forward to those monthly deliveries.  One of my favorites was a cheese called Gjetost (sp).  It is a carmel colored cheese that you would slice wafer thin.  It melted in your mouth and was delicious with the morning cuppa.

the weather here is slowly warming.  Hopefully I can get enough stone down before the ground trurns to mush.

I had the power go out just after the post the made earlier in this thread.  :-/ It is now Thursday morning at 6:39 or so.  The power came on around 3:45 this morning.   for the second time.  The thawing is going on, rain is falling pretty good and the temp is around 33 or 34.   I had power trucks running up and down the mill driveway much of the night as well and the county road.   Not much good sleep.  

Yep Rav, I recall those good ol' "snow days" wishes.  They have had three of them in a row here, this week.  Some schools are even planning on  Fridayfor no school; with the temps getting up to the low 50s. 8)

Frank, it sounds like you are getting pounded pretty bad down there.I haven't seen much on the news about Oregon,but on the news a couple of nights ago it did show that Oregon and Washington were right in line with the Pineapple Express that was coming at us.

Went out a couple of days ago, it was 7 deg. needed to put a new o ring in the bobcat, my fingers froze to the valve.

I made a decision that it might be too cold, got back in my truck and went home...Hmm maybe tomorrow...

Like Frank, lost power yesterday came back on shortly this am. than failed again came back on about a 1/2 hour ago.

Several trees came down in the hillls around us yesterday while shoveling ice and snow with the neighbors we listened to approximately 30 large trees falling.

With the power gone several neighbors were nervous about the 150' DF's with in proximity of their homes.

Remember, don't be hard on Paul as Frank told him during the flood we would help. 8)

I am afraid so Paul.  :'(  I have not been about the traverse the entire farm as yet to to view all of the possible damage.  I have heard some pretty goood sized trees falling but have yet to see them.  I just came in from repairing one frozen pipe and am trying to warm up.  I find, I get colder working in the stinking rain than in a dryer cold with snow falling.  
Most of what I have lost have been large limbs from Oak trees.    I was just at the South end of the farm and found a 16" Oak had fallen, just missing my woodworking shop and the Mechanic shop.   ;D
I hear tell that the Pineapple Express from Steve will be here some time on Saturday.   It is to get up to 50* and sunshine.  We will have to wait and see what Steve has sent us in the form of warm tropical air. 8) 8) 8)

Gosh, I thought we were cold on Tuesday.  It was  - 7F with a steady 33mph wind.  I had to keep my goats shut in their tiny "barn."

After hearing your stories I quess I'm glad to be in Iowa now! Today was +29F and only a 10mph breeze.;D

Now about cheese...One of our better customers stopped by today and asked..."You wouldn't want to buy a pound of blue cheese, would you?"???  Apparently, he had bought more than he needed for deer sausage.  :-[   At $15.00 a pound, I decided I would let him keep it.  Just a little sharp for me. ;)

   Someone mentioned the steam coming off the lake. On the ocean I've heard it called 'sea smoke' and it was very much in evidence on the Fore River (a tidal river in Portland) this AM. We are nowhere near needing icebreakers yet. Recently they were talking about ocean temps still in the 40s. That won't last long at these temps now, tho. It's like looking at a mind's eye view of the Arctic- awful but beautiful. I might like it more if I didn't always get frostnip on my feet- ever since I was a little kid, and I don't think they will ever be right. o well, at least I still have toes.  lw

Well Im only 90 miles from the coast so it seldom gets below minus 20 Celsius BUT we get a thing called "THE ARCTIC OUTFLOW". Apparently its a wind, nasty wind, that wants to go to sea. Windchill factors in the -40 range. >:(Terrace is known as 'Little Chicago" aconna the wind. On garbage day, you dont get your cans back, you just lassoo any two or three a passin by ;D

Well, Paul, I guess you got us beat.   I am just about ready to set out the tomatos here with only 12 to 14 inches left of snow lying around.  We could get up to 40* today.  Loren told me this morning that the roads were the most dangerous he has ever seen in Oregon, this last week.  He is a long haul trucker throughout Oregon, N. Calif. and Western Idaho.

Now, If I can get the waterpump repaired on the tractor I will be in business today.   8)

The weather people are predicting that this coming weeks temps are going to be lower than what we've just had.  An Alberta Clipper is supposed to give us maybe 4" of system snow then the Saskatchewan Screamer behind it is going to kick in the lake effect machine and it's anybody's guess what we'll end up with.  Snow and cold is the sure thing anyway but hey spring is only a couple months away 8) 8) 8).
  Fresh picked apples would be good 8)  A couple days ago I was back to the hunting shack just poking around and noticed the tree there still had apples on it.  Kinda  brown and shriveled and even if you wanted too you'd never be able to take a bite :.

  Got some snow last night and this morning , got the plow on the truck headed out and made a couple orfour driveways and broke the pivot point on my plow well that sort of put a damper on plowing today >:(  We had done the pivot  trip last year it should of lasted longer .... Murphy law I guess ???  
  Well we got it back together this after noon and will be pushing snow in the morning.

Never got much above 5 degrees this weekend, and I was running all over town chasing broken water pipes and sprinkler heads and water meters and (well, you get it) with the Fire Department.  Did manage to get the work room in the barn up to 50 degrees to do some much needed home repairs and fix the welder.  Got a good start on a welding cart too.

Gotta get back to sawing next weekend, we've got about 4000BF of pine due by February...
