A first for me.  Sitting and driving to the Pig Roast really played havoc, especially to my right hip.  When I stopped, I could hardly walk at first.  At other times while driving, I had to shift my butt around to relieve the pain.   :-\

I don't have time for this crap.

Make certain that you do not have your wallet in a hip pocket when driving any distance.  The extra thickness at that spot will relocate your hip joint into a much less comfortable position.

Hip pain due to hip joint arthritis is usually located right in the front of the hip.  I mean the groin.  If the hip pain is on the side, it is most likely a trochanteric bursitis, and can be treated with anti-inflamatories or a cortisone shot.  Hip pain at the back or the hip, or butt, is usually related to back maladies and is not really hip joint pain at all. 

So, where's the pain?  If it's in the front, it's x-ray time.  If it's on the outside, take some Advil and quit your whining.  If it's in the back of the hip or butt, it's really your spine and, depepndent upon how bad it is, you may need to see someone.  At least you got to GO to the pig roast! ;)

Many thanks for that info Doc. Answers the question going around in my mind when hearing about hip ops including yours.
I've likened my pain to a muscle pull or muscle cramp that doesn't let up.  But I'll hit the advil if it becomes unbearable.

Does your cramping pain develop in your butt when you are walking or doing something strenuous, only to let up when you rest?   That type of pain can be vascular in origin.  Let me know. I am headed to the movies!

My pain is very low in the butt and in the back side, about half way between the side and crack.  Not the side or front at all.  It has been the right hip, but it is the left today.   :-\

For about 6 months or a year I had a tender hip after driving where it was difficult to put weight on it after getting out and trying to stand.   The pain was kind of in the center inside.  I got relief by putting my foot up on the tire and flexing the hip forward and stretching the front tendons for quite some time (maybe 5 min straignt).  I also stretched the groin by keeping one leg straignt and doing a deep knee bend with the other to the side from a standing position.    It has now gone away on its own.    Might try some stretching to see if it helps.  I also take glucosimine and condroitin tablets.  Not sure if they help or not.

I think that your description is maybe better than mine.  Deep and in the center.

OK guys, your descriptions are NOT good enough!  It can hurt deep inside your hip / pelvis, but your symptoms are usually groin (front), side (like where you'd give somebody a hip check!, or the butt(back).  So, which is it?

If it's low in your butt it's either nerve root related - sciatica - or sacroiliac joint in origin.  That's an unusual location for hip joint pathology to hurt.

Pain right at the hip pocket/belt line. Not when walking or doing work, but after sitting for a stretch at the computer, or long drive in car.

When the pain comes do you feel a little numbness on the outside of your thigh, like where you would slap your thigh?

No numbness  (you did mean numbness and not dumbness, right?  ;D ). Please say yes.  ;)

Pain not sharp, more like a bruise would feel. Walk about, and it goes away.
