I have a small Honda 9 horse on my log loader, brand new muffler, still freaking loud!  It's the same issue with my Honda powered power washer, but I care less about that.

Anyone have any suggestions of what kind of muffler setup I can add onto it?  I was thinking of figuring something out with an adapter from the current muffler to a car style muffler.

Any ideas?

Most times it is not the muffler.  It is the internal noise from the engine itself.  A padded box will work, but then you will have ventilation/cooling issues.  A baffle/screen between you and the engine will help some.  There just is not an easy fix.

If you are interested, PM me and I will send you a link from http://www.rv.net/ concerning quietening generators.

Something like this?

Thanks for the links, I'll do some reading.

I just might be getting old, I don't know.  I have muffs on all my hardhats, and a pair of ear plugs in the back pockets of every pants I put on.

The freaking thing is just obnoxious.

I have put a small car muffler on a small engine before, it works well to lower the noise level, just adapt and braise/weld till it fits. also consider support for the muffler so it does'nt tear apart the connection to the engine.
Been doing so much with so little for so long I can now do anything with nothing, except help from y'all!

Use schedule80 pipe  . the thick wall make a mellow sound.  The longer the pipe the quieter it will be.

Check out the super mufflers they sell as after market units to make an ATV lots quieter. Either one of those or something rigged to connect up the same should work. Just don't restrict the exhaust flow or you will burn the valves.

Brendon, I built a muffler a few years ago for an old Onan single cylinder engine, and it turned out very well.  Attached is a link to my post (second one from the last details the construction).

Try a Super Trapp Muffler They make a noticeable difference compared to the factory muffler on most small engines.  The "Model Selection Guide" link on that page gives more info on the noise difference.

I'm not sure how they did it, but my 13 hp Honda generator is super quiet. It's still an air-cooled engine, so it must have a heck of a muffler.

I expect it is just an expense issue, if you are willing to pay it can be quiet. I use to use an old, old generator, it was old 30 years ago. Screw in tube muffler sounded like successive firecrackers when it was running. One day I had to be near it for hours and I was driving an old truck with the muffler/tailpipe just wired on from something else. I popped the muffler/tailpipe off the truck and slid the tailpipe loosely over the tube muffler. It made a world of difference. I would like to do something like that with my wood splitter plus point the exhaust out up high. Probably should have one of those exhaust flex joints that some cars use at the transition from the motor to the exhaust.

Just playing around one day with an old engine I had that had no muffler.
I screwed a short 2 foot chunk of stainless steam flex pipe in the muffler hole.
Wow did I get an surprise. It was like putting a cadillac muffler on it.

Putting on a small automotive muffler will quite it somewhat.  It also helps to point the exhaust away from where you operate it from.

Thanks. Ill get a elbow and send the noise into space. Maybe next try a muffler added to that.

I guess it beats the noise of a chainsaw, a conveyor, a splitter, and a grapple trailer. Just took possession of a crd processor, so now its just a 24 horse honda and the grapple trailer with the 13 horse honda.
