Need a muffler for my wood-mizer with the Onan 24hp
« on: March 12, 2012, 06:01:57 PM »
So a year or more ago the end of my muffler blew out.  I found a quart size stain can that was a near perfect fit as a "get by" fix.  It has held up but blew out this past week.  I fixed it again with another can bottom but really need a good muffler.  If I can't find one I'll end up using two small mufflers - one on each cylinder.  Looking for a new or good used one.

Thanks
Victor

Victor:
I was trying to find the story, here on the forum, about the last time I changed my muffler. And I can't find it for some reason.
Well anyhow, I got one many years ago, from the local Onan dealer, and it was something like $160 or so. I'd have to look up the paperwork to be sure.

Then not long ago, within the last year. This muffler let go at the pipes where they enter from the engine. The reason why they let go is because the support bracket bolt fell out and I didn't know it.

Well anyway, I ordered up another muffler from the Onan parts supply house where I get my parts and it was something like $395 this time. I about fell off my chair.

I'm paying close attention to that bolt to make sure it doesn't fall out again.
I said I'd hold on to the old one so that I could be repaired by having it welded up.
The guy who helped me install the new one and adjust my valves suggested that I put the two pipes back onto the engine first and then mount the muffler to where it should be, and have it welded there. So that everything lines up and can be removed to adjust the valves again.

I haven't done that yet.

Do you have a Onan engine dealer near you?

I don't know if WM sells just the muffler any more but you could ask them.

Good luck.

If you can't find a replacement muffler, how about going to the parts store and getting a regular $25.00 muffler, nothing fancy.

1. Cut the existing muffler off by cutting right next to where the pipes are welded onto the muffler.  That would be the heaviest part of the pipe.  Leave the pipes in place.

2. Plug the entrance end of the new muffler, do that by cutting the bit of straight pipe off, leaving just enough to weld on a piece of similar gage metal.

3. Hold the new muffler up to the pipes and when you're satisfied with the fit, mark where the new muffler lines up with the pipes.  Make appropriate size holes in the side of the new muffler.  Hold the new muffler up to the pipes and tack-weld in place, enough so that they won't move.

4. Unbolt the pipes and remove the entire assembly, weld the pipes securely to the muffler, then reinstall.

Hope this helps you out.

Jim - I do not have an Onan dealer near me but will check with the local parts place and make sure they can't get one.  Wood-mizer site says the part is NA.  I'll have to look into the valve adjustment recommendations.  I have nearly 1400 hours on my mill.

Chuck - That is my plan if I can't find a muffler only I was looking at two small mufflers one for each pipe.

Thank you both for the replies

If you need a part number, I could look it up for you. I may have one.
Also, if you can't find one, I'll sell you my old one.
I can take pictures of it if you want me to before I close up the box.
Just let me know.

Make sure you do adjust your valves. It is important to do that. I didn't and it cost me an engine.

Jim

If the part # is different than what WM uses I would really appreciate knowing the oem #. Do you remember what the adjustment was on the valves.  Don't go searching too much for that as I'm sure a call to WM will get me the info on that.  I'll pm you about your old one and what you would want for it.

Thanks Again
Victor

Might be the same as the Deere Onan engine muffler, and yet it may have different specs.

Take a look here.      Deere part no. is AM100221  for less than $100

Hey Beenthere

Thanks a bunch - that looks real close. :)   I'll try get a measurement center to center on the pipes - that would be sweet if it matches up.

if you have access to a welder, just fab up a glass pack...new muffler for mine is like a hundred bucks...which is right at what I paid for my Wild Pig Mufflers for the Harkey..nothing doing. I have been zipping the little piece of junk back together for a couple of years with a MIG welder, and when it goes again, I have two pieces of driveshaft tubing that will fit together concentrically with a quarter inch or so between...weld spacer on the end of the inside pipe so it will fit the outer snugly, drill a bunch of holes in the inner pipe and wrap it loosely with fiberglass cloth....cut disks to fit either end, with appropriate inlet and outlet...fab it to the original exhaust pipe, and route the outlet someplace other than in your face.. lol   it really is not too hard, the goal is to keep roughly the same back pressure as the original muffler. certainly not as critical as with two strokes.
Got Wood?

And lots of junk.

Victor, I suggest butchering the old and building your own. I have a little over three hundred in a kit from Woodmizer. I saved the old one and will build my next muffler myself. I can't stress enough how careful you need to be with the mounting bolts. I was very careful and still broke two off. Delayed my game a bit.  Normally, the pipes coming out of the motor are still in good shape when the muffler comes to pieces. A mig welder could zip it right up.

Victor:
I found my engine manual and on the cover is my note about valve clearance. It says intake .005 and exhaust .013. I wrote this down in 06 when I had a service guy do the valves.

I also found the invoices I mentioned.
One shows from 05 muffler part number 541-0315 for $119.50 plus two gaskets part number 154-2747, for $3 each.

The next invoice I found says, it's from May of 2010, and part number 541-0315 was $286.97 same gasket numbers but was $3.51 each.
Intake gasket was 154-2219 for $5.25 and Valve cover box gasket #110-3575 were $3.47 each. I put two sets of intake, exhaust, and valve box access cover gaskets so that I'd have a set on hand, for the next time.

So this just goes to show you my memory about the prices was off.

Also, this place that I got these parts is just southeast of Boston.
I have their webpage and phone number if you need it.
Also, I believe they would ship them out by UPS to you if you needed them.
But you should be able to find a closer source to you.

I'll pm you later.

Just hack off the pipes where they attach to the muffler and then attach a nice chrome stack made out of a sink P-trap. You gonna wear ear plugs anyway, right ?  ::)

I did what Chuck White suggested for a Kohler twin cylinder I have on a Walker Mower.  I was not going to spend what Walker or Kohler wanted for a muffler.  I have a wire feed welder and the skills.  I utilized the existing pipes that go to the engine.  $20 - 25 for the muffler of close to same size at an Auto Zone.
