Trailer hitch cover question

Ok, so I know I have a trailer hitch on the back of my SUV, but sometimes I still walk into it.

And my legs show the scars to prove it.

I just did a google and ebay search for "trailer hitch covers" and all I get are things you put in after you remove your trailer ball. Or a cover that goes over the trailer ball.

What I want is something to pad the hitch so when I walk into it I don't get banged up again.

I was thinking of something soft like a small pillow or something. But I need it to stay on while driving.

Anyone got any ideas about what I can make or put on that will work?

Jim Rogers

PS. I know I'm not suppose to walk into the trailer hitch, but it happens so don't waste your time telling me to "don't do that"...... ;D

I need something when I'm out tailgate selling tools.....

Are you talking about the draw-bar sticking out from the hitch?
You might try an inexpensive rubber football. Cut slit in end of football and slip over end of draw-bar.
Or open tailgate forcing you to walk around the draw-bar. Of coarse this only moves the pain from the shins to the thighs.
Or remove the draw-bar and place it in the bed of your truck.

Maybe one of these?

Do they make one of those to cover your noggin'? I learned the hard way not to put the service manual for you mill on the rail underneath the raised sawhead.......... scalp cuts bleed a LOT!!! :-[

Some people grease the balls which really isn't a bad idea and cover the hitch ball with a slit tennis ball .I just let them rust myself .

I'd hate to know how many times I've checked lateral strength of receiver hitches with my shins, worst part is 90% of the time it was broad daylight and they always seem to take more than i can give  ::).  I could just pull them out I guess but I'm always hooking up to something or other so......

Norm

I just leave mine on all of the time. Seems after some time your mind remembers the shin hits and you avoid them.

That being said earlier this summer I hit mine with my upper shin and it hurt for 3 weeks.

There are some towns/villages in this area that will issue you a ticket if you have the hitch installed in your receiver and don't have a trailer attached!   ::)

On come on Chunk, say it ain't so. I have got behind some good size pickup trucks and they have quite the weapon sticking out of the back to hitch a trailer on to. One of those with various size balls to hitch too. :o Looks like it would hit the engine before my bumper would hit the truck.  ;D  That will make you pay attention more.  ;D
I use to have the same problem too. After I ran into a few times I learned to give it some room so it would not come out to bite me.

I'm probably a bit more dense than most folks. There's one of them shin busters sticking out the back of both my trucks AND my tractor.  Plus the hitch is still attached to the lt40. Maybe that has something to do with my shins always being skint and sore  ::)

Someone else has found this a problem too, clearly.  I also liked the football idea.  Slit the football and put a couple of pieces of foam inside!

Here in Mass. it is illegal to leave a hitch installed in a receiver ( because it sticks out past the bumper ) and you can be ticketed for if. I have heard of drivers being issued a warning for it and one person failed an inspection because of it.

I drive around (MA) everyday with a hitch sticking out.

I sometimes haul my tailer several times a week, so I never take it off.

I never got stopped for it and I got a sticker last time with it on......

So today I go to the mailbox and in it is the big white envelope and I didn't know what it was.

I brought it back to my shop/office and then I looked at the return address.

It said "hitch Doctor"...... from Ohio.....

I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was inside.

I cut it open carefully with a pair of scissors.

And inside was the "bright Orange" foam rubber shin protector:

It was just a matter of seconds to slip it on.

And it lines up good:

I'm am pointing to a "just about healed up" spot on my leg.

And it works great:

Best birthday present I could buy myself.

Nice for only $6.45..... and free shipping......

If nothing else it might detract them from  chewing on the gas lines and flex brake lines of which they seem to be fond of .

If you're talking about the leaves on the ground, yes, I'm parked under a pair of red oaks.

If you're talking about my legs..... well then....... they are surely some red oaks.......

So, I'm trying to buy a new trailer hitch pad/cover like the one in my pictures above.
Not finding it anywhere.
All of the links in previous posts from 12 years ago don't work anymore.
I've search on Amazon, and eBay and other hitch company's sites and can't find one.
Does anyone have a new link to at site where I can get one?
