Some of you know and some don't that Katie and I purchased our retirement property about 10 years ago and other than mowing and planting some fruit trees it has set empty.  Well it's about time to get ready to start building some of the animal shelters, cabin and work shops.

One of the guys at work moved out to our neck of the woods and wanted two grain bins down and out of his way.  After a bit of negoating back and forth a price was settled on and the removal started.

The bins are 16' across and just under 20' tall at the top of the top ring.  They are in great shape as they only had grain in them twice since 1978.  8) 8) 8) 8)

Our plan is to take and set up 3 rings and a roof for a small cabin to stay in during vacations.  Windows will be added along with a sky light in the auger entry.  A center fire pit is to be added along with a chimney that will go up through the center cap.
The rest will be set up in arches on slushed cinder blocks for an implement shed and some live stock shelters.  The one thing we will have to do is take a welder down and tack the panels together so the scrapppers don't steal them.  We have great neighbors down there now that keep an eye on the place and we let them hunt and pull all the scrap metal out of the old junk yard that is on the place so we are hoping that theft won't be such a huge issue.  Just in case we are going to put up one building and let it set awhile before we build to much.

that sounds like it will be a great cabin, and if you decide to build something bigger later it will give you someplace to stay while you work.

That is a novel idea and it will be interesting to watch your progress.  I could visualize stud walls, insulation, and lumber paneling.

Great idea!  Better to get some good use out of it, rather than scrapping it out!

Don't forget to take some writing pads and pencils with you, it could get awful noisy if you got some hail.   ;D

After standing there for all those years, they should still have plenty of years left!

I think I counted 6 rings per silo? That will give you some to use for aches. That center fire pit will look good. What are slushed cinder blocks?

We had a guy that made a house out of a silo.  Each room was a separate level.  Did it back in the '70s.  I believe his has an elevator, and a circular staircase.
