Peter,

There are six logs in all, and I have opened up two and they were both beautifully spalted.  The plan is to cut 4" thick blocks and to sell them to the bowl turners.

OMG, WDH, free logs that are nicely spalted. Now that is something to drool over. Is it just the sap wood that spalts or is the heart wood spalted as well?
Now you got me thinking. I left a couple of red maple logs out in the woods a couple of years ago. Maybe I'll try to find them.

There is much more spalting in the sapwood than in the heartwood.  As you get more to the center of the log, the spalting disappears.

Anchorseal.  It has worked well for me in the past.  Just need several coats.

My junk doesn't compare to y'all but Ill show them

Picked up this ugly piece with a load of walnut.
Studied it for a while how I wanted to mill it.

Idk what it is? Burl ? Was a growth of a branch of a butt log.
I think it turned out a nice unique piece!

Fishpimp, that's about the most unusual piece I've ever seen.  A wood carver would have a great time with a piece like that.

Has anyone milled roots?  Lots of embedded rocks, but some pretty wood inside.

I milled a big SYP tap root a few months ago.  Nothing but solid fat lighter.  Talk about gumming up a band!  I don't believe I'll do that again. ::)

I envy you guys being able to sell spalted timber. Here I regard it as a curse... doesn't matter how pretty it looks with a coat of varnish on it, it's hard to sell unfinished.

Some nice stuff there gentlemen.

My wife's in the States so... working weekends too.
I kinda like weekends, it's when I get time to cut at my own pace and do the stuff that probably isn't commercial, either logs I'm expecting trouble with or jobs for mates.

Like this one... Fruitwood as it's called, which I guess sounds far more marketable then mango tree.

Woulda been nice except for that horrible value reducing staining... ummm spalting :D

I believe MM said he salvaged that single hook from either a cant hook or half a logging tong. Might just call it a single hook, as they have been used for many years in logging to handle logs by 'end' dogging them. Member Loggah might know an 'official' name.
