For those of us in the great white north and me especially this is an important date. I always rationalize making it through a winter up here that February is a short month, then we are hitting March pretty quick. Of course March can be brutal with snow and cold too but you know spring is that much closer.

Days are getting longer too, for me when we hit those days in December when it's dark by 4:30 that's hard on the ol psyche.

Come on spring!!

POSTON WIDEHEAD

I know what your saying Norm. I go through it every year and dread it every year after Christmas.
It's gets really depressing during Jan. and Feb.I'm like you....come on Spring......and I'll be glad when the time springs up.  :)

February 1 is when the annual boat launching permits for our reservoirs get processed.  Nothing means the end of winter like pre-spawn bass fishing.  I'm right there with you Norm.

Yes, February.

Hey, tomorrow is Ground Hog's Day!  I wonder..........

I like it when the days start to stay lighter longer.

Like you said Norm, the light/dark affects ones psyche, so we have to be mindful of that.

When we get bored, we need to turn on the "thinker" and find something to keep busy with.

I like puttering on my mill, which is in the garage during the Winter months.

Right now, I'm working on the Pineywood lift assist mod.

How right you are. My Father would say,Feb is a short month,March is not far away. We can still get plenty of snow and have in past years, but come about mid Feb,that cold weather should be just about done. Yes,we may have a day or two every so often, but not one week of it.I don't really like the snow, but that double digits minus temps I don't like at all.

I to am happy to see it staying light longer. Those short days make me lethargic. I truly feel like I should be napping the winter away in a dark cave somewhere.  :D

Before I retarred, I had a lot of cattle to feed;  always thought that January would never end............I think because it basically lasted from December 26th through January 31st.  By comparison, February just flew by.
Here's to us and those like us; DanG few of us left!

I could launch my canoe today and it wouldn't bump the dock for three months  :(

Its almost daylight at 5:00PM now..

We have a medical name for the winter blues -  Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  They suggest using artificial light to keep your spirits up!

What should we shine the light on Doc?  ;D

Slowly getting towards spring. I don't get too excited over February UP here because other than the longer days its very cold and very snowy just like most of December and January. Now come the middle/end of March when the snow is mostly melted and the hay stack is getting smaller I get excited for spring when I can turn the cattle loose on pasture and get a little rest in before I start gearing up for spring planting and then hay season.

Hey Doc, what do you about the depression that sets in when you get the electric bill? :D

Ahh February.  Today is the coldest day of the year so far at 8F.
My grandfather was born on FEB 2 1874 and Okmulch was born in Punxsutawney Pa.  So FEB 2 means something too.

Yeah, I have to agree with everyone ;) The biggest thing I hate about winter is the amount of daylight, very depressing and restricting for chores and work. Pretty soon the 'Bama boys will be turkey huntin' 8)

As far as that *DanG ground hog goes, I only live 50-60 miles from Punxsy. I keep threatenong to assassinate that rascal one of these days :snowball:

Every year during January I swear I am depressed. Once the longer days and warmer weather come about in february or march I start to feel better. During January I could swear I worry about everything and can't come to really enjoy things very much. Always hits right after Christmas. Come on spring!!!

In November/December as the days grow short and dark I feel like I'm going up a set of stairs that has no opening and the higher I go,the more the ceiling closes in.I have to watch my mood and keep going. It bothered me more when I wasn't fully aware of it but now see it as simply a season to go through and am actually thankfull now for the forced slowdown of winter,a time of fallow if you will.

Spring and Summer are a time of busyness and long hours working and playing, sowing and prepping and the days fly by as in a dream.

And March can't get here soon enough! >:( Every year it seems I can deal with the cold weather until about the middle of Feb. and then my patience wears out.

I probably get the SAD (cabin feaver?) since I feel like sleeping alot so when the sun does come out I get outside.    It seems to help the seratonin levels.   Just getting the light in the eyes is a help.  Maybe the vitiman D is a factor also.

And, this may really sound wierd but getting a hair cut really brightens up my spirits.   Something about getting the hair up off the ears or just sensing the change in length.   A bit like a dog running around in the yard after a bath.... :) :)    Never hurts to clean yourself up after a hard winter eh?   :) 8)

They say the light is most beneficial if you shine it on the back of your knees - but if you are using one of those moron lights strapped to your forhead it gets a bit awkward  smiley_roller

Somewhere I once read that 'spring' travels northward 16 miles per day. I suppose it is measured from the point of sun on shortest day of the year?

Nice to know, the Sun is coming, God save the sun!

OK, I know this is mean, but... Feb in NZ

OK to be fair, we didn't have the whole beach to ourselves.

So hang in there. Seasons will swap over soon enough.  :P

I just watched Punxsutawney Phil do his thing. His handlers had to beg Phil out of his winter's stump den.

But Phil, ever the showhog, didn't see his shadow and declared, "it's spring somewhere!"
