Nice view on top of the world. :sunny:   Yeah, 26° this morning and more snow fell in the last few hours. And Wednesday I tracked a bear out one of my trails to the road. He walked to the oak tree and crossed the road and down over toward the beaver pond on the neighbor. There is another bear closer to home with a path like a cow path crossing the road, neighbor had corn fields and has free range sheep. The kids there said they've not seen any bears. I told them about the path, but they was kinda busy making snow forts.  ffsmiley

John,
Just checking to see how things are out by the cabin?  Have you guys got your normal massive dumps of snow yet?  Any idea how the snow is shedding?

We've been getting snow and rain switching off and on the last couple weeks. Maybe a foot of snow on the ground, roads are clear but wet on the traffic cams. Back on November 12 post with the inch or two snow on the tarp was the most I've seen.

Forecast keeps talking about 8-10" accumulations each week but the cameras don't show it. Another round for the 24th and 25th.

Maybe you'll get lucky with a mild winter up there?  But, with mother nature, you really never know!

Thanks for the update

John,

Our snowpack in NH has shrunk considerably in the last week.  Any idea what its like up at your cabin?

Slow and steady buildup on the snowpack. I haven't ventured up.
Another  13" came down a few days ago. Weather guessers backed off of 3 storms coming Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Now just Wednesday but 2 to 5 FEET predicted.

I saw the topic resurrected but with your snowfall, I see that is no resurrection in your near future.

The weather down here has been great.  Some rain storms, some heat.  Getting days in the upper 70's and low 80's and I get antsy to go work up the hill. But last week another 3 or 4 feet of snow dumped.

I wake up around 5 or 6 thinking of all the things I need to do this year.  This goes on for a week or so and all the projects keep churning and I'm not getting any resolution in my mind.  Time to make a list.  It started out small, a half a page.  I'm going out on a limb and making this prediction (schedule).  In a few hours, it had grown to this:

PP is Ponderosa Pine that I still need to mill, dry and T&G to complete the loft flooring.  I missed being able to mill it last fall by about a week.

I wanted to insert a PDF so you could read it directly, but no, had to do a picture.  I suppose I could attach the PDF.

IF, and a big IF, I start on June 1st, I'll have my Full Frame inspection on 7/29. Assuming no variances to correct, Dried In (roof on) by 8/11 and Really Dried In by 8/28 (windows in, walls planked and sided). Then Final around 9/24.  First snow is usually Halloween +/- a day or two.

I just realized I could get started on the kitchen countertops.  I remembered that I have a few 9' slabs of cedar dried in my garage that I could plane out, fill cracks and put an appropriate finish on them.  Suggestions for a durable kitchen countertop?  Hard Wax Oil?  I also have a line on some free kitchen cabinet carcasses that I could make new face frames, doors and drawers if I get ambitious.  I just don't have a place to store them.

Oh yeah. Re: Cell tower.  So next year the tower should go up.  The contract will include running conduit from the PG&E transformer to my cabin.  In the meantime, I purchased a Quonset hut garage kit (12x32) that I can add on to at any time.  Initially, I'll use it to store my camper trailer and tractor.  If I add on, maybe keep the Genie and store it in there, too.  I'm probably going to have the contractor level off a pad behind my cabin (rayrock), just to the right of the road to the cell tower lease.  I'll run electric to the pad location and then to the back of the cabin.  I could put the meter at the pad or the back of the cabin.  I picked up a screaming deal on some wire at auction. Right around 150' of NM B 2/3 w/ground for $370 ($2.47/ft).  It goes for $20/foot in a 500' roll at HD or $10/foot on eBay for cutoffs at 50' (too short).  If I put the meter at the quonset hut, I'll put in a 100 amp panel (have my welder there?) and a 50 amp panel in the cabin (lights, water pump and maybe a clothes washer).

I like to play in the snow, not live it.  But, I could spend 2 or 3 weeks up there getting snowed in!

This is getting exciting especially after reading your "To-Do" schedule.

I remember my ambitious days when I would tackle such, but my old bones won't cash that check now.

I like the list. I'd like to do a list for the year but am afraid of how large it would be.
I think I'll try one for 6 months and see how that looks.

John,

After reading your to-do list, I feel WAY BETTER about mine! ffcheesy

Question, I noticed toward the beginning of the list some sanding and sealing up in the loft, then realized that the roof isn't on til a while further down the list.  I've always tried to get the roof on asap, but your working a whole different set of circumstances up your way!

Granite,
Most of the rafters on the West side spent YEARS sitting with a leaky tin cover. The have lots of weathering and some mildew to get rid of as well as making the smooth. It appears to take two winters to make the wood look weathered so I'm not too concerned if I get a rainstorm after cleaning up the wood.

Keep on mind that this is California. After mid-May, it typically won't rain again until October.

Still haven't ventured up the hill.  My neighbor went up the hill to ski a week and a half ago. Mostly clear at my place though he didn't go the extra 500' to actually see it. Been very warm down here and in the 60's up there with freezing overnight. So I was hoping to head up this weekend.  Now it is predicted to have scattered snow showers Saturday and Sunday.  I have a ton of customer projects to complete down here so another week "delay" is OK at this point. If I can get in next week, I'm ahead of my schedule.

I finally got a wood spool to store my NM B 2/3 wire.  My son helped me unroll the coil down the street, measure and then spool it up.  I've got 220' of wire. Final cost, $1.68/foot.   There is a slice in the outer cover at 179' with a 3/4" slice in the black wire insulation (lengthwise).  Depending on my needs, I may tape that up to get the full use of the length.

I will have the cell phone company install 3" conduit between the PG&E transformer and my cabin as part of the contract. I figured I would also make a drop at my quonset hut pad. That will necessitate at least four more sweeps. I got these from my favorite auction site that I'll give the contractor. All 5 for $6!
