Well I finally got the deal finished up and taking the check over Friday for the 540. Can't wait to get it home and do some welding and get all the fluids and filters changed. Planning on having it in the woods within 2 weeks if the guy hauling it keeps his word. One question does anyone know how much hydrolic oil it holds? I wanna drain the system. Also motor oil? And rear end grease?

KyLogger

Should be able to find out that info on JD's website under archives if I remember correctly. I have a 440B, so my capacity info would be of little help. Check and fix everything you can prior to taking her to the woods, trust me. It takes alot off your mind when all you have to do is pull wood and not mechanic all the time!

Good Luck, if I can be of any help just drop me a line.

The deere site has every model but the 540B an 540D go figure

Crawl under and check the frame rails real close.I rented to buy a 540B,and had the turbo go while on the job.I decided not to buy it and when another logger did buy it,he found a missing axle bolt and cracks in the frame. The operator who came with the machine on my job said there was nothing wrong with it.

In the 440a the tranny holds something like 9 gallons, and the axles around 7 gallons, I would imagine that the 540's hold more? just an educated guess.
the 440 engine holds 9? quarts... its early... could be 7, buy a pail of delo and don't look back...

Make sure to fix all Hydro leaks as soon as you see em, you get 2 gallons low and turning starts to be an exercise in pucker power... and it don't take long to get 2 gallons low.
well that didn't work

Hope its a good machine and things go great for you  :)

Me to thanks for the pointers an well wishes. Have to stop at the bank and get a check tomorrow and hope to have it home Saturday. Anything else I should look for/check before I hand over the money?

Power shift or not? When I was looking at JDs I was told to stay away from them, the guys I was getting info from said when they are working there great but when the need to be rebuilt they are super $$$$ to fix. Good Luck on the new skidder.

Engine oil is 5 gal plus or minus a little. I think the axles hold around 5 gal as well. Unsure about the hyd never drained that. They are good skidders I have had mine about 3 years. Good luck!

Take a good long time checking it out again don't rush! It's no fun getting something home and finding something wrong. Run it for awhile get it hot pull some logs etc..and find out reason for selling. I ran one with a bucket on a ROW  it was nice bit also new. Good luck!
I've met Vets who have lived but still lost their lives... Thank a Vet

Family man and loving it :)

This machine does need a little miner work some welding on the limb riser and a seat. The only reason he's selling is because he quit working it 3 yrs ago except around the farm

Nemologger

If the engine is a 4045T it holds 15 qts. of motor oil, rearends hold about 4.5 gal. of hydraulic oil. Not sure but I think the trans and hydraulic holds 9 gal.

Thanks a lot guys yes it is the power shift tranny. I'm not to sure on the motor yet just that it's a 4cylinder jd motor

Timbercruiser

Watch that power shift fixing it is enough to put a one man outfit under. Hope it is good and it runs well for many years. If its as good as a clark tranny its good . :)
