I'd suggest getting on to the Deere site jdparts.com (register for free) and look at the schematics of all the parts for your model. That will give you considerable more information that will help you zero in on the mysteries.
Also, believe you can buy a manual through Deere. May even have a tech manual besides an operators manual.

Another alternative to just buying parts and replacing, without knowing what isn't working or just needs tweeking or bleeding out air, is to contact a Deere dealer for a technician to come by and check it out. Costs for their labor but may save $$$ in the end and you learn at the same time.

beenthere,

I'm pretty much a do-it-yourself type of person.  I've paid supposedly competent technicians to work on stuff for me and 98% of the time I'm not satisfied.  I'm not going to pay anybody to do it unless I can't.  I have a parts manual, I've looked online at the schematics for hours.  The questions for which I seek answers haven't yet been uncovered so I was asking for a bit of assistance hoping for a bit of a shortcut.

That being said, I just ordered an operators manual!  :-)

Thank you guys.  The machine is 43 years old.  Regardless of what it was fitted with originally, wouldn't grease be better than 90W?  If so, would it be prudent to make sure all the fittings will be zerks for my grease gun?

Snowstorm, Coxy... since y'all have a bunch of knowledge and I have barely any regarding this machine (no operators manual either) can you please answer a few questions?

I can't find the fuel filter/separator. Will you point me in the correct direction?  Also, I don't know the interval for greasing or all the points that need to be greased.  Help would be invaluable.  Since the machine uses/leaks oil, can you tell me how much it needs to top it off when the level is at the low mark on the dipstick?  I overfilled last night.  As far as the hydraulic reservoir is concerned, there is a sight glass that shows the level on the side of the tank.  The fluid is halfway on the window when the machine is off and not visible when its running.  Is this correct?  There is a dipstick in front of the shifter.  I don't know if this is for the transmission or the reverser.  Whichever one it is, I can't find the other.

The engine misses.  I bought 3 injectors yesterday and intend to replace them when I get a chance.  When I took a look yesterday after I started it up to raise the loader to add oil, I noticed a bit of fuel leaking from the front injector where it appears the line attaches.  This relatively small engine seems to consume quite a bit of fuel and maybe this could be one of the culprits!  I know there could be other issues, mostly minor.  I'm concerned that once I replace the injectors, the miss will still be there.  Don't know what to suspect then.  I don't even know how to remove the covers to get at the engine.  Looks like it will be an all-day affair!
like i said if the idlers or rolls are leaking oil they are worn out. if not leave them alone. they were designed to have gear oil in them. the old 420 and 440 had grease in them and you should use a low pressure gun on them. depending on the year it could have 2 round fuel filters or the square glass one. the glass one it 10x better. if it has the round ones buy a new filter base and change it to the glass one you will be glad you did. that one you can change without getting fuel on you. they are on the right above the starter. and dont let the fuel run over the starter when changing filters. it wont like it. been a long time since i worked on a 350. i do have a 450. the dipstick should be bolth trans and reverser . use tdh jd used to call theres 303. in the loader aw68. half way up the sight glass engine off is perfect. there are plastic tees on the fuel return on the top of the injector replace them all. with age they leak thats how fires start. on changing injectors take the steel line off the tee the bolt and pry or pull. sometimes they come out mean. after replacing injectors and filters use the hand pump its the lever on the lift pump. fill the filters open the bleed screw when all the air is out tighten screw and keep pumping you will hear the fuel flowing thru the injection pump and back to the fuel tank. that helps get all the air out. you may have to bleed the injectors if so lossen the steel line and crank the motor till there is fuel tighten go to the next one. good luck
