Nebraska

I have a neighbor that's a teacher. Advanced math and shop, he called me asked if I had any Ash and that a young lady requested some for a shop project.  Sure no problem, I have given him materials for a few kid projects. I didn't think much of it and went about finishing my snow moving project. Then he texted me the rest of the story.
She had just gotten back to school after a family tragedy. I know the family and the rest of the story. He told me she wanted especially to be in shop class because she want to make a cremation urn for her twin brother they just lost. I found the nice piece of walnut and added it to the stack and told my neighbor to have her make a cutting board for her mother for Mother's Day.  I am blessed and thankful for my life and family, I know it can get upended in an instant.

John and I have been sawing and drying some heart pine for a guy's barndominium.  He picked up about 400 ft2 to finish it up this week.  This building is close to 4500ft2.  We sawed most or all of the wood used for the floors, some of the walls and the fence boards for the horses.

The customer sent me the pictures.  All of the flooring was sawn at 8" and 10" wide and 8'.  He wanted a rustic look.  He is trying to convince his son to do the same in his house, which was flooded in Hurricane Helene.

@Nebraska as an old shop teacher myself, thank you!

A few board feet here and there really goes a long way.  Not every kid can scrape together money even for the simplest of projects and budgets don't go as far as they used to.

It gives you great pride when you see what customers do with the lumber that you saw for them.  You and John can be justified to smile.

Looking fabulous!!!

It's always nice when we can look at someone's completed job and know they appreciated our efforts and did something worthy with it.

Sawed today for 2x previous customer. 1hr each way, three 8' oak logs all about 26-28". He had six helpers all sons/daughters in law,nieces/nephews. Arrived 730 exited 1030. By the time i was packed up they had everything stacked and mess cleaned up.

He took me inside afterwards showed me 12' x 42" walnut trestle table from wood I sawed 15 yrs ago. Very happy today.

Here's a coffee table I made for my son's apartment from pine that I milled.  Letters are CNC routed, then painted the cream color, then filled with epoxy before being milled flat and stained/polyurethaned.

He's a student at University of Vermont, so the Green Mountain sign gets lots of thumbs up.IMG_1110.jpg

Change is hard....
Especially when a jar full of it falls off the top shelf and hits your head!

Local wind direction is determined by how I park my mill.

Lately, most of the live oak that we've sawn has been used for dunnage, but one customer buys just about all we take the time to quartersaw.  He sent me some pictures of some chairs that he is building.

A couple of the live oak chairs after the cushions were installed.  The tabletop is mocked up below.  These boards cleaned up at 1 1/4" and are 84" long.

This guy deserves a special mention. An old enclosed verandah getting a makeover from lino covered pencil round to... I dunno what to call it besides a work of art.

Before much routing and customer effort.
Not much timber sold just some 1/2" strips, although there's half a chance those original Johnstone River Hardwood boards may have been logged by someone in the family back when

And after:

Sometimes it's not how big the order is, it's what the customer can do with it, right?

Somewhere in the past, I've posted pics of my next door Neighbor's Charcuterie Boards, and in a previous version of Whatcha Sawing, I showed a Maple Burl Lg I sawed for him. I hope you enjoy the Before and After pics below:

Not my logs, but a neat project I thought I post a few pics of. ffsmiley

Local grade school my family has close ties to and has been involved with for many years, is putting up a new custom made playground. This will be the swing set.

Climbing gym.

Hollow tree playhouse.
From what I seen it's all made of oak logs, a company out of Canada pre-built everything and shipped it to be put in place. This ties in well with the forest location of the school, it is named for the woods of maples it's located by. The kids tap trees every spring, going back many generations (I did 40 some years ago). They then make maple syrup for a class project, and serve a pancake breakfast to the community. ffsmiley

That is a wonderful project but I question sinking logs into concrete if indeed that is what happened.  ??  I know that swings take much horizontal stress and need to be well anchored but I would prefer to use some sort of anchor that would prevent wood/concrete contact.

Don't know how they anchored the logs for the swing set, was on a weekend and the construction crew was gone when I stopped. If I find out more I'll let you know.

I hated to sound like I was taking anything from the project, just concerned knowing that the sapwood would rot in a very few years.

Current state of the art with that type of construction with those type things is to have a weldment structure set in the slab when it is poured. The log has a corresponding mating plate that interfaces and secures to the weldment sometimes including a steel post that goes up inside the log. The log is not cast in the concrete for these sorts of things, they won't pass safety engineering muster if they are.

Note the 'feet' on the jungle gym. they will also probably be below grade.

Also there is no splashup on the timbers further indicating that anchors are being used.
