Got more snow on the ground and sawin cypress just don't work as well when the logs are white on top.  I think that I'll just stay in in the morning.

Cypress Sam,how often do you get snow?
bandmiller2,that must be the storm that will hit here Thursday. It will be all snow here. That is good. We can handle the snow part just fine.

I was not happy putting my mill to bed for the winter but since this has been the worst or best winter depending on ones point of view It's a good thing I did.   Not only has it been colder then normal we have had more then 200" of snow this season so far.

I am a skier but I am so over winter.

I hope summer does not take to long to get here.

Arkansas is a strange place in winter.  I can be 9 degrees on Monday 80 degrees on Wednesday and back to 20 by Friday.  You don't have a chance to acclimate to the temp, and the snow and ice melt causing the ground to get bad.  Then it refreezes and thaws out worse.  This happens all winter.
Do not think that I am complaining I like the warm breaks in February!!
Half frozen logs are another story!!

Sam, I'm fairly sure the frozen log thing is a myth  ::) I'll probably never know for certain, because when the temp get below 40 °, I shut the mill down and go watch the fire in the woodstove  ;D They say that firewood splits better when frozen, don't know about that either. I split mine in april or may.. I'm about 60 miles southwest of Sam, across the state line, we got 2 inches of solid ice. I ain't getting out of the house except to go fetch some more wood from the barn..

Piney did you have to fire up the genny this morning.
Ice is the worst!!!!

Yep, ice is no good.  I was sawing some spruce logs yesterday that had 3 inches of ice on one side.  When the blade hit the ice I actually saw a spark fly.  Now I have a dull blade to change.

A few years ago we made a trip to Arkansas about this time of year.  Just before we left there'd been 75 degree weather there.  We were sick of winter up here and figured we'd have a nice break with some spring like weather.  We had snow, ice, wind and cold the whole trip.  Biggest snowflakes I've ever seen were in Arkansas  ::) ;D :)  We were glad to get back to Michigan ;D

Seems the weather patterns are changing down south (its always been crappy cold up hear). Its good form to have an auxiliary heat supply be it wood or propane that doesn't require power. A standby genny is handy especially if you have a well. Week supply of food gasoline and diesel. Then hole up til the ice melts. Frank C.

It actually cracked the 32º mark for a few hours yesterday afternoon.   We sawed a couple of hours to finish up an order.  Sunshine and no wind made it feel like it was 60º.

It's been so bitter cold for so long the logs may stay frozen for months down in the stack. Some will thaw on the sunny side but be frozen on the bottom side.

It's hard to find anything good to say about winter. The only advantages I can see is that you don't have to check for ticks or watch out for snakes.

boy am I sick of winter too! its supposed to be better today here in south mo. our 7 day forecast looks like 40s 50s and 60s! it seems we have had snow on the ground since December. where our new house is built we have a much shorter day. when its dark at the house I can walk up to the road and its still bright out. that makes for a short thawing time. im ready to get sawing again. I don't think I have milled a board since December. send that poar vortex back north!!!

Sitting here in Long Island at Best Western watching the snow come down. I could have killed my dispatcher when they sent me here yesterday smiley_furious3! And the worst is to hit yet,I'll be here a day or two. This has been a bad winter for truck drivers also when it real cold it's hard to hook up anything.
Have a good day everyone and keep warm smiley_sun

The rain has dumped on us, and a few of the 70 calfs needed shots pills and bands.

As you tell they are purty content so not a big chore.
