However, people learn from it.  For example, in the black locust pic, you can see that the earlywood cells are plugged with tyloses.  Since the rays are not visible, that leaves only a few species to consider, namely black locust and osage orange.

Something obscure, that is located only in a very small area, or is very rare does not have the same learning value as the woods that most people encounter on a regular basis.

Absolutely!  As a student, these lessons help me a great deal. I haven't sawn any black locust and to be honest, without my tree ID book, I couldn't recognize one.  I knew from clue #1 that it was something I hadn't come across.

And then when WDH or someone else as knowledgeable explains the characteristics of a given wood, it helps me a bunch.
Whether I retain any of this information is another story.  ;D

I agree it is nice to use as a teaching tool. :)

However, it is very fun to do the stumpers from my end. ;D ;D ;D 8) 8) 8) dadgum you, Charlie!

I will make a point to mix in the common ones just to keep you on your toes. ;D
