Stihl 031 Coil
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:43:05 PM »
I have an older (1984) Stihl 031 with a bad coil.
The shop I gave it told me the coil is bad. The points and condenser are still good.

Stihl supposedly discontinued the coil. Since it looks like it's impossible to get another one, does anyone know if I could use another coil from another saw?

Or, does anyone know the inductance of the coil that I'm supposed to have?
It is hard to believe that there is no other coil in the world that would work.
Even if I have to mount it differently than the original.

Cheers

Three are from a saw that had electronic ignition and mine has points.

Is there a difference? if any?

And the fourth one is a service to repair the old one.
Which seems a bit high.

The parts list shows two different coils and two different flywheels .If I'm not mistaken on that one you have to pull a plug on the flywheel to set the points .

Seldom however does a points type coil go bad .Usually what happens is the low voltage portion of the circuit encounters high resistance and it just fails because of same .Corrosion of some sort perhaps ?

Unfortunately I don't have the specs on that model but would suspect the points are set somewhere close to 18 thou .

So the shop is telling me the coil is indeed bad.

Does anyone know what I should read when I meter across the coil?

Also, is it simple to convert over to the electronic ignition and get rid of the points? This way I can purchase the coil?

Cheers
