Lynn, outstanding SYP.  Does not get any better than that.

Pine Man, you need to grow taller, I would tell you to eat more wheaties grits, but that would fall on deaf ears (old saying).  :)

You ridealongers are gonna have to get booster seats for them booster logs!  Lol
Boy, back in my day..

That is funny Peter, two "head" pictures.  No problems David, smooth sailing.

Danny, I said Longleaf and I am sure that at least some of them are.  Runny/sticky sap.  More "platey" bark, and here are a couple of pictures of some old cones.

They were between 5" & 6" long and more oval/rounded than long.  Longleaf cones should be well over 6". ??  This was the same "species" that I sawed last week and I am easily within 25 miles of the other site.

Today, I drove 44 miles north of me into NH to view a job, where the customer said he had 250 logs to cut.
He had someone there cutting for him but the sawyer had an injured hip and couldn't finish the job. So, he's looking for someone else to come in and do this job.

He wants most of it cut to 1 1/8" thickness for flooring.

There are all kinds of woods in this pile. Some ash, cherry, birch, beech, maple and in the second pile some pine, as well.

Here are some shots of his pile:

On the way to the log pile is this nice little kid's playhouse timber frame:

And you have to enter this to get to the "eagle's nest":

I asked him what was he going to do with all that flooring. He has just put a big addition onto his house.
And you can see part of it in this barn photo.
I took a photo of the barn as it has a unique fascia board along the back wall. The gable end wall was sided with oak boards left over from his last milling job.

He wants it done right away. And he's also interviewing other sawyers from his local area.
I really hopes he picks one of them.
I don't look forward to cutting all those short logs. Lots and lots of them were under 8' long

Jim Rogers

PS: I told him that if he ever did another harvest to make sure his logs were 8' long minimum. He said he cut them short to make them straight.
(To me it looked like a pile of firewood, but I didn't tell him that.)
Whatever you do, have fun doing it!

Jim,

Looks like the reason we set up hourly rates. I'd either do it all by the hour or tell him the short stuff is hourly.

As soon as we get 2 days of dry weather scheduled I have a small job where the bulk is bf rate then we'll cut up some cherry and maybe quartersaw a log on hourly rate. He just wants the cherry cut into cants so won't take long to do that and he can resaw them on his shop bandsaw as needed.

Good luck on the job one way or the other. If you don't want it and get it anyway you aren't charging enough.

Cutting short logs is a pain in the butt .
I don't care for it much just did it for myself on grade stake logs :)

As soon as I saw that log pile, my first thought was "Danger, Will Robinson!"

I gave him an envelope with my rate sheet in it. Hopefully he'll read it. It says daily mileage charges as well as mileage to set the mill up.

Some of that looks like the knots would run the whole width of the boards.
