Oh my, I am afraid to go and look at the log piles.  Surely through next week.  They are buying more property so this may just be a "practice run", and I do not know whether to be happy or sad.

Talking about "equipment" to move logs, slabs, and timbers around, I was well blessed today.  Trackhoe, skidsteer, and three men.

My largest log today.  20' with a 22" top end and 28" butt.  I also had never sawn this species before.

There was some lost time getting everything squared away this morning which is normal but I still managed to saw 1965 bf. with 1½ blades.  I  should have been able to saw that with one blade but as you can see, there is sand.   :-\

I was interrupted three times by folks wanting me to saw their logs.   ::)

Lynn,

Its always good to have the right kind of equipment available.  Was the mill able to load that biggest log, or did you have help from another piece of equipment.

I noticed you said that you should have been able to get nearly 2,000 bdft from one blade. I would have a very hard time getting that kind of life out of a blade in big hardwood like that.

How many blades did you go through today?

I was able to load the log by using both the loader and the log clamp.

I should have gotten more blade life because I am not sawing lumber, just timbers, beams, and posts.  The smallest thing that I sawed was 8X8's and the largest was a 10X16.  All of the logs are 18' & 20' which makes good production.

I changed blades ~3:00 so I will put it back on in the morning.

After any icy start to the day, got some nice walnut sawed.

Absolutely as wide as I could get it...had to push the saw past a few points where the guides were rubbing.  :o
Started out with a brand new carbide and hit metal (drywall screws).  >:( Went to 4° blade since log was frozen. It's about like cutting it with a chainsaw in comparison.

Nice 10/4 and 12/4 slabs though.

That piece of walnut just looks off to me.  Please send all the slabs and lumber from that log to me for proper inspection and disposal please.  WOW, BEAUTIFUL!!!!!  While I love cutting logs into lumber, a little more diversity in species than we have here in AK would be nice sometimes.  Love walnut, they just don't grow here though...

Yes indeed! Walnut is like opening a gift at Christmas. Also for "looking off", yes it does.  :D
I know you were kidding, but green walnut is just that: greenish or tan, until the air hits it, then it turns brown.

WLC, you must have laughed about that "snow storm" I posted.   ;D

Enjoy sawing today!  8)

PA,

I have used a carbide blade one time, when resawing hickory cants.  It worked well,  but from what I remember about the price, if I had hit metal, I'd have been mighty upset.

Lynn,

I see the Hampton Inn at least has adequate internet access this AM.

WDH, I asked WM and they said only the factory can do. What they cost? I haven't sent any in yet.

I did remember something about California walnuts being grafted, not with maple though  ;D. Did a google on grafted walnut and they do, in order to produce those thin shelled nuts.

Dave Shepard

I think apple is used for stock for a lot of grafting because it is so hardy. Not sure if it's used for walnut.

In California they graft English walnut onto black walnut root stock.

So far so good with the equipment operators.  We are going quite well with the sawing this morning but it is raining now.  Radar shows it passing so maybe we can get more done this afternoon.  I think that tomorrow is forecast to be a washout.

Last night was my last stay in the Hampton Inn and l'll be staying in a rented house.  No internet so l'll have to use my phone.

That is what I heard from someone in the industry years ago.  Something about disease resistance (or maybe nematode resistance?).  And over in GB, they graft black walnut to English walnut root stock (so I was told).

Just to be clear, Walnut (English or black) root stock is compatible with walnut (English or black) scion wood,  apple root stock with apple,  some that are in the same family like apricot & peach can be grafted to the same root stock.   Maple cannot successfully be grafted to walnut or vise versa.  Maple cannot live on oak or apple or......  When Danny chimes in, our expert will have spoken.  :)

Thanks Jemclimber. I've been away from the nursery business for a long time. We didn't do any grafting, but I know you could see grafts on most of the stock we got in for planting.

PA,

A bit over $20, about double that normal re-sharp on the double hard blades.

Jem,

I don't know my root stock from my scion when it come to grafting  :)

I had a good day today.  Rain stopped us a bit early and there are no pictures.  Oops, I forgot.

Anyway I tallied up 3626 bf for today which gives me 5591 bf so far for the job.  I have sawn 30 posts and beams, etc.  plus a few 1¼X12's.  I finished the blade that I put on yesterday and used one more, so now the blade count is three 7° Turbos.
