MM do you know where in Sask its going. That is great to have lumber you sawed coming here.
I know the general location, but I will know more after today.   I am fairly sure that a broker will be involved at least to get the permitting done.

It is pretty simple, you call up a broker, give them the information, they do all the work to get it across the border, you pay a fee depending on the cost of the product, the trucker gets the go ahead and you hope there are no hiccups :D
I think in 13 years of hauling i could count on one hand the number of holdups and 2 of those was the border security problem with computers.

The ERC is for wall paneling in a new lodge that is being built in Goodsoil, Sask, which is in the NW corner of where roads go.  He is planning a border crossing at Portal, ND, so the load will travel very close to you.  His customer had already told him that he would need a broker who would handle everything.  I gave him some Google links and a blank Certificate of Origin which should help him.  I also told him "NO HANDGUN".

This job is exactly as I expected as I have sawn for this customer many times.

Two rows of tree length ERC logs ready to be bucked.

And this small whack of Cypress logs.

The smaller Cypress log was fractured and yielded exactly zero usable lumber.

The butt log was 47" and needed the flairs Bibbyed off.  Cypress lumber in the trailer in the background.

And then some more Bibbying.

Yes there are times when making wedgewood is planned.  In this instance to remove the final wedge of butt flair.

I neither tallied nor pictured today's lumber, but tomorrow will be another sawing day.  My goal is to finish sawing the ERC this week.....hopefully.  He will haul the SYP this week or weekend which will all be sawn into framing lumber,

Where does he get all that cedar?  You have sawn a whack of it for him.

I think I'll point out the obvious here, he gets it where everybody else does, at the grocery store...DUH!

Yes, I have sawn many Mbf of ERC for this customer.  He is a logger and when tracts are clearcut, the owners, especially timber companies want the ERC gone before it is replanted.  He makes it disappear and he is also my all time largest customer.   :)

When I got there this morning the logs had been bucked into 8' 6" logs so it was on to sawing.  The largest butts are probably only 15" and the smallest tops are 6", so I am handling many logs.  This cuts down on the daily yield, but I am happy.

This guy was not so happy because his log got sawed and so did he.

The customer asked about edging some slabs for him to use on special projects.  I have never done such, but whatever he wants I will try.

Here I am edging a few slabs along with a couple of flitches.  Actually it worked well.

I did 129 today ranging from 4" to 8" but I scaled/billed them all as 1X4's so 2.6bf each.

I will be more than a week just sawing ERC and he has not brought the SYP yet.

MM,
Very interesting.  What in the world is he doing with all that milled cedar?  Selling it?  Making LOTS of fence?

As I noted in Reply #3495, much of this is going to Saskatchewan, Canada.  I have also seen it loaded out going to North Carolina and Houston, Texas, so I suppose he is always looking for markets.  Looking at the logs, (probably around 300) this year will not be my best year sawing for him, but it certainly will be OK.

We sawed some 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 8' tree stakes for a local landscaping company. They usually buy from me every spring several hundred.
This year's order is 200.
Didn't get a picture of yesterday's delivery of 100 of them but I should be able to get one for the next load.
All were red oak.

Where do you guys get all those straight logs? Mine always seem to get bent on the way to the mill. :( :( :( :snowball:

We get really happy when we get a 6 foot log. :(

Gabby had a nice starting whack ready for us this morning.

The largest top end was 15" and the smallest was 6½".  It's slow going to make good production out of pecker poles, but we just kept at it.

This was at noon.  The edged slabs are also mounting up, but I did not make a tally.  We finished these and about 5 more before stopping for the day at 3:30 pm because of a Grandson's birthday.

My customer decided that I needed some "fat lighter" so he brought me a whack.

More sawing tomorrow, but I will be off for the weekend.  Da old man needs a break.   ;D

I just got a new customer, who said that his old sawyer isn't going out on the road anymore with the wood-mizer because his wife won't let him anymore on account of his age.  He retired from portable sawing at the ripe age of 92. I can only pray I make it that long.

Actually, I am with you guys, 'cause I probably should not be hitting it as hard as I am.  I keep telling Pat that things are gonna slack up after I finish this job and then another comes in.  I talk to lots of folks, put them down on the book, but you never know which will actually be a sawing job.  A couple of these last ones, I never figured would ever call back, but they did.  Of course the regulars are always there.
