I think most of us have found that on one occasion in the distant past, even dropping as low as 6" can send sparks flyin'. We call this "baptizing" a sawmill.  ::)

LOL, I did that to mine with the starter blade... and now I have... texture.... on my log dog handle.

My mill will not cut lower than 2" on the last pass... and it's because the log dog is too large to clear the blade.  I plan to fix it one day, but for now, I just add a board under the log when I do my last flip, and the last one comes out 1"

The first band mill I ever ran was a Wood-Mizer LT30. It was all manual, and had a 14 hp. engine. It would not cut closer than 2" to the bed.
That was about 1995, and it was a pretty old looking mill then. Not sure what year it actually was.
1996 Timber King B-20 with 14' extension, Morgan Mini Scragg Mill, Fastline Band Scragg Mill (project), 1973 JD 440-b skidder, 2008 Bobcat T-320 with buckets, grapple, auger, Tushogg mulching head, etc., 2006 Fecon FTX-90L with Bull Hog 74SS head, 1994 Vermeer 1250 BC Chipper. A bunch of chainsaws.

My 1986 lt40 stops 2" from the bunks.  By stacking some boards underneath, I can easily cut down to one inch though.

At least with a bandmill you have limited liability, screw up and its just the cost of a twenty or so dollar band. A big headsaw within 1/2" of steel makes you as nervous as a plump rooster around Frank Purdue. Frank C.

Hey, thanks for the welcome guys. I've learned a few things already. I'm just hanging inside today, waiting for sugaring weather to show up (small operation - I tap about 600). Maybe then I can throw the battery back in the mill, and get some things milled out at home before the customers start pushing.... 8)
