wood shed timber size
« on: April 21, 2015, 03:33:46 PM »
Im thinking of having a go at timber framing my wood shed.  Looking to go 12x24x10.  My OWB will be on one end partially under cover.   Gable roof would be 6-12 pitch with 2x8's.  I was thinking of using 8x8 lumber for all the components and perhaps 6x6 for the braces. Target is to be completed by fall of this year ready for winter burning season.

Are the 8x8's overkill?

It all depends...... what is your snow load? where are you?
6x6 braces is overkill. 4x6 is usual

A simple sketch posted up would help. Post spacing will determine beam sizes and such.
Plus, we love pictures.  ;D

If you post in the middle I see no reason why 6x6 wouldn't be enough but 7x7 or bigger looks more "proper" IMO.  Metal roofing will help too.  5x3 braces.  If your gunna build it, overbuild it.   When in doubt, build it stout...
