My Franklin/Sweed 20 or 600 (I cant remember) winch is acting up. Sometimes it will hold 3 20" trees, other times it will drop out about 10-15' (almost like there is a sweet spot in there and if you are lucky enough to find it it will hold). It free spools and winches in perfectly What I dont understand is when the trees are plowing mud, it holds fine. Only when they are up to the arch does it drop.
I tightened the brake at the handle and that didnt help. I didnt go much with it tho. Today its raining so I am going to tighten the nut up in the winch to see if that helps.
My question is, I probably glazed it from it pulling out-is there something I can spray on the bands to help it hold? I really dont want to take them out but will if I have to, Im getting wore out fighting it to the landing. It is a mechanical winch and the bands are dry.

i don't have much time with franklin but it sounds like the brake band.

I popped the winch cover off yesterday morning. The adjustment nut is a pain to get to and wouldnt turn for me. I saw 6 springs that hold the teeth in the cog when engaged, 3 were laying at the bottom of the winch. I stretched them a little (til I get a chance to get new ones) and put them back on.
Then I went and adjusted it more at the brake handle. Voila, she holds like a bear now.
I noticed one thing on these old Franklins- one tooth on the brake handle can mean the difference of holding or not holding.

The dogs/cogs look good yet. Come to think of it, I ran a few skids with the cover off just in case I had to do something else in there. It did click like crazy with the cover off. With it on you can hardly hear it.

i don't mean to open up an old post but ...there is a small spring in between where the brake meets ...like where it squeezes together ...there is a threaded rod there and its one of the way to set the winch brake if that spring is rusted to the brake or it is poked out through the hole and getting caught on the threaded rode ..it makes it either way it will be impossible to set the winch brake ..it will never lock up or release the same way twice ..its just a spall spring likely a hardware store would have a similar one ..there is not a great deal of pressure in that spring either ..nothing compared to lifter spring on a car
it is what it is
