last year hard to start used carb cleaner to get it going cut three truck loads of fire wood, this year same deal started it with carb cleaner reved it up and it cut out will not start. Took to a dealer and he said need a new carb and they don't make a replacement for it he also said all the fuel lines are shot due to ethanol in the gas. I hate to junk this saw any one have a shop manual or know were I can get parts.

Welcome aboard. I doubt if the carburetor is not salvageable, it is a Tillotson HS-181A that uses an RK-21HS kit. The fuel line is easy to replace. When you remove the carb check the condition of the gaskets and insulator block.
Service information is not easy to obtain from Stihl. The Tillotson site will show an exploded view of the carb and service tips. Any shop that deals in saws should be able to supply carb parts, if not try an Oregon 49-803 overhaul kit.

thanks for the quick reply I never had to work on this saw other than the bar and chain it never broke down so I am new at this I taken engines out of cars and replaced them, but never really had to work on the saw I checked the Tillotson site and its lists a repair kit rk-17hs is that correct? I hate to sound like a jerk but what is a insulator block?

You are correct, it should be the RK-17HS kit. I was going by Mike Acre's site. If you remove the air cleaner base and the carburetor you will find a gasket, a brown bakelite block, another gasket, a heat shield then another gasket. If the gaskets are damaged or the block is cracked air drawn in will give an overly lean mixture no amount of adjusting will correct.

I have the same saw. I always wondered how old it was. WOW 35 years giver or take. It always runs.

My experience with chainsaws is too recent and I have never come across a 041, but I did have a look at the parts cd. The good news is that diaphragms and gaskets are interchangeable with those of a 088/MS880. Some other parts too are interchangeable. I think Stihl still carries the 041 parts, but they need to be ordered.

Will this view do. I did a screen capture from the cd.

There are 4 different carbs for an 041, as well as six versions of an 041. Your version is dependent on the country of sale. before ordering look at numbers on carb. Stihl offers all the parts still.

My very trustworthy 041 bought new in 1975, and ran without a hiccup until I replaced it in 2004 with an MS361. Finally gave in to the pressure of anti-vibe and chain brake. Left it set a few years and then found out there were some fuel lines that were letting air in. Replaced those and back to a good saw again.. but don't use it often at all.

041 Farm Boss was my first Stihl saw and it still runs good, at least 35 yrs old. If my 041 would have been an AV I probably wouldn't have gotten the 044 and if I wouldn't of got old I probably wouldn't have bought the 261 that I mostly use now. Seems like about every 15 years or so I get a new saw but never get rid of any.

I have a shop manual and parts list for my 041 AV.  Once or twice,
I had the same sympton as your saw and it was caused by a loose
carb which was easily corrected.
