Something special
« on: April 16, 2016, 05:47:21 PM »
Today's slabbing project was for a customer who saved a 200+ year old black walnut from the fireplace.  He had previously purchased a chainsaw mill, but was unhappy with the inconsistency I thickness.  Once he found out there was a slabber in town, he was quick to call.  What you see is the last full log, approximately 5' wide, and 5' long.  The figured branch at top was cut 2" and the main girth at 3".

Nice job.  That puppy had been sitting awhile.  How did it cut?

That is wickedly beautiful.  It's a shame that the green quickly oxidizes and fades.

The owner picked up the whole trunk (3 logs) from an arborist who was going to cut it for firewood.  It was pricy to get home, but well worth it.  No idea how long it has been down, but by the story, I would say 3-4 months at least.  Given it was removed from historic downtown Fredericksburg, I am sure it was standing deadwood for a while.  Due to the width and figuring, it did not slice easily.  I used 1 chain for the first half until it was DULL.  Swapped out a second, and was slowing down after 3 more slabs.  Threw on a third chain and finished out the last two cuts.  Total time was about three hours with setup, tear down, and handling.

Really nice!  I didn't expect that to be solid all the way through.  It sliced up beautifully.  Hope you sawed for a share.

I wish... Owner had a stack of slightly skewed slabs from the chainsaw mill job that he turned down 1k per slab green.  I really have never seen anything like them.  I will be planing them square once they have air dried a bit.

If that doesn't inspire more people to get a slabber, nothing will!  Beautiful work!
